INSEAD Singapore VS Hong Kong UST

AnalystNYC

Many would agree that degrees from these two schools are the best in Asia. Finance junkies will surely choose Hong Kong UST, but for overall MBA prestige INSEAD does have the edge outside of Asia. In my opinion the only way to find out which one is the best for you is to apply to both of them and talk to as many people as you can.

I personally would take HONG KONG UST anyday, not only in Finance.. Insead Singapore is very overrated, one quick visit to that campus tells all. but then again if someone is into the whole "image is everything" mantra, he/she might think different.

Every MBA program is unique and everyone needs to make a careful decison when choosing an MBA, its one of the bigger expenses in life! In Asia however I would narrow it down to Hong KOng UST, Insead, and possibly CEIBS if one speaks Chinese and wants to work only in Mainland CHina (Beijing or Shanghai)

I find it extremely difficult to figure out which program is best in Asia. You speak very well of Hong Kong UST but I would like to know why you think it is so extremely good. You hardly give any reasons. Could you please give us some information that we can verify?

I've checked the web site of HKUST and for example there is not much information about the faculty, which makes me suspect that these professors are not very active in research. Then I think you mentioned some links with Kellogg, but I don't see that. I don't see where it's relevant. For example I didn't much faculty from Kellogg in the web site.

This story of Kellogg-HKUST reminds me of an old story between IESE and Harvard Business School. When IESE started, years ago, it claimed that it was some kind of subsidiary of HBS. That wasn't really so, of course, even though they had some agreements and received some advice from HBS. But it helped IESE build a reputation for quality. Something similar happens with INCAE in Costa Rica, and I get the feeling that HKUST is trying a similar strategy too.

Then there is INSEAD, but when you try to understand who's actually teaching in Asia versus France it's just impossible. There's no information! How is someone supposed to choose a location without knowing who's teaching there? I suspect that the best faculty stay in France, because that's where they have more tradition and a stronger academic environment, but I may be wrong.

To sum up, I think that both places are quite opaque. They should tell us more about their programs. It would help a lot.

Allow me to begin with INSEAD, you are absolutely right saying that the best professors stay in France. The Singapore campus is just for show. The facilities are terrible, very few electives, etc. However you do get the INSEAD diploma, for what its worth.

INSEAD facilities in Singapore, to me they look like some executive MBA program housed at a local hotel..
http://www.insead.edu/campuses/asia_campus/facilities.htm

Here is the biggest problem with INSEAD, it is very weak in Finance overall having only 18 professors, of which 3 teach in Singapore, thats not a typo only 3!
http://www.insead.edu/finance/

Available electives in Finance are absolute joke! Community colleges in the USA can do better than that. Singapore campus does not have any tailored Asia electives. Only Asian exposure students get is living in Singapore.

INSEAD is one of the larger MBA programs taking anywhere from 900-1000 students a year. Having 18 Finance professors is definitely inadequate for such a large program. Thats why they have an opinion of sucking in Finance (not much research + poor elective choice) It is worrying to see they only have 3 Finance faculty members in Singapore..I was aware of the fact the that satellite campus in Singapore was definitely not as good as the one in Fontainebleau, France, but did not know the difference in quality was so big. That campus, who would want to study in those conditions??

I haven't had time to look at all the information that was just posted by Globetraveler about HKUST, but I did look at the faculty and research in finance and I have to say I was very positively surprised. They seem to have a group of excellent faculty in that field, even better than INSEAD-France.

I'm not so sure about Globetraveler's comments on the electives. INSEAD seems to be offering 11 electives in Finance. I'd say that's very good. Even if HKUST offers more of them, I don't think there is much you can tell from that fact.

HK UST offers almost triple that when taken into account more quant oriented courses which you can take from the Msc Investment Mangement and Msc Financial Analysis programs, add onto that the new M.S. Global Finance.

I agree with you that sometimes quantity does not equal quality. However show me one, just one elective, at INSEAD tailored to Asian Finance..... We are talking about INSEAD Singapore here, lets not forget it.

At HK UST you outside of Asian Finance tailored courses, you can also take a series of China Business offerings.

China in the Global Economy
China's Economic Reform and Development
China's External Relations
China's Industry Analysis
Politics and Socioeconomic Environment of China
Investment and Finance in China
Venture Capital in Asia
Leading in Asia for the Future
Management in a Chinese Context
Managing Alliances in China
Doing Business in China

The truth is that even INSEAD France is not a "top school" anymore.. Looking in the past they never had even one area of excellence, just a decent overall program. The school is not well known in the US.. I would put it in the same category as Emory, Notre Dame, Cornell at best, but that is stretching it.

Here is what Bankersball.com has on the subject of INSEAD.

http://www.bankersball.com/2006/11/21/insead-the-forgotten-b-school/#more-354

"November 21, 2006
INSEAD: the Forgotten B-School?
Newly appointed INSEAD dean Frank Brown is on a mission to bring the business school?s brand up in the world, reports the WSJ. The school, which has campuses in France and Singapore, bills itself as the ?Business School for the World? but seems to have issues with the world knowing what it is.

Says Brown: ?The biggest challenge that we have is communicating the Insead brand. ? I?m amazed how many people know the name Insead but how few people know what Insead really is.?? ?I think that the Insead brand should become more synonymous with the word ?leadership,? and specifically ?transcultural leadership.? We really do generate people at Insead with a unique perspective on the world. Our participants have an ability to navigate across geography and across cultures and really have a significant impact on organizations. ??

Efforts include strengthening the U.S. alumni network and creating a U.S. office for alums and executive education.

Despite apparent fans in the ranks of the authors of its Wikipedia entry, the school did not make the top 10 list of the Economist, which apparently is one of the few b-school raters that rank international schools against each other.

By the way, INSEAD is not an acronym. ?Like Harvard is Harvard and Wharton is Wharton, INSEAD is INSEAD.? (From the INSEAD FAQ). Also, INSEAD is not a French business school, it?s just in France."

As for INSEAD Singapore I must be brutally honest, that campus is just a mistake. Its a European school lost in Asia. Plain vanilla curriculum basically taught by professors not good enough to teach in France...No Asian focus whatsoever. Really ugly looking facilities.

I will admit INSEAD Singapore was #1 on my list before I started searching for the best Asian B-school. It quickly dropped down the list to the point where I did not even apply there.

Here is something that should settle the debate once and for all.

The latest independent ranking of Finance departments in Asia-Pacific undertaken by 2 US Universities, Western Kentucky and Dayton. The ranking begins on page 16 of the research paper.

HONG KONG UST #1 (notice how far behind #2 is)
INSEAD-Singapore #103.

http://fnalumni.ust.hk/news/Asian_ranking.pdf

And here is proof that Hong Kong UST is better than INSEAD overall, World Finance Rankings, Univ of Arizona research 1990-2006. Hong Kong UST would be much higher if it was not for the fact that 17 years ago when they started this research, the school did not even exist! Hong Kong UST was established in 1991. Also notice that #1 Finance school in the world NYU has chosen Hong Kong UST as its only partner in Asia in developing an M.S. Global Finance program with Asian focus. To me that is saying something and a clear confirmation that Hong Kong is #1 in Finance in Asia.

HONG KONG UST #25
INSEAD #46

for all praise the Finance department at HK UST has been getting, Accounting is even better.

"HKUST is Asia's premier accounting program, combining world-leading research, award-winning teaching, outstanding students, and a state-of-the-art curriculum to train tomorrow's leaders. All faculty are PhDs from the world's foremost universities - Berkeley, Chicago, Carnegie-Mellon, Illinois, London Business School, NYU, Oregon, Oxford, Purdue, Rochester, UBC, UCLA, Washington and Yale - who offer cutting-edge insights and international perspective vital for career success in the 21st Century. HKUST's curriculum develops all-round knowledge, communications, professional and leadership skills that employers want. HKUST attracts Hong Kong's best students and HKUST graduates earn top job offers and honors on CPA exams. HKUST is accredited unconditionally by the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants. In 1999, HKUST became the first accounting program outside North America to win accreditation from AACSB, the premier accrediting agency for business schools. In 2003, HKUST became the first outside North America awarded a chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, the world's premier accounting honorary. In two recent years, HKUST topped the world in original research published in leading research journals. In 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005, HKUST ranked "Top 10" in the top three journals (Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, The Accounting Review), a record unexcelled by any university worldwide.
I knew INSEAD Singapore is, for the lack of words, a below average school, what I was not aware is just how bad INSEAD-France is. Looking at these rankings, these guys are not even second tier in the US!

As someone currently living in Singapore, I can tell you first hand that INSEAD-Singapore is not well respected around here. One can not call what they have here, a "campus" the facilities are really bad. Local students do not even apply there. European students coming in have this view of INSEAD as being a good school, I for one can not confirm that.

I have the impression that some of the contributors to this thread are biased against INSEAD for whatever reason. In the following discussion you can find some different evaluations of INSEAD Asia and the job prospects for its alumni: http://www.find-mba.com/board/4491 (see posts by mbaconsultant).

BTW: The popularity rankings on this site (based on user views) places INSEAD Asia before HKUST and all other business schools in South East Asia and East Asia: http://www.find-mba.com/most-popular/asia - so its MBA program obviously gets more attention by prospective students than all programs in Hong Kong and mainland China.

I think an MBA from INSEAD Asia will give you better job prospects than HKUST as far as European employers are concerned (including European companies operating in Asia). Its European program is well-respected in Europe and anyone who has completed his studies in Europe will know that.

INSEAD takes in anwhere from 900-1000 students a year,
HONG KONG UST takes in less than 100. Based just on that there will be more people looking at INSEAD because its a mass production MBA of low quality, and all it gets you is the INSEAD MBA with the alumni network thats brainwashed into believing INSEAD is good. For all of you INSEAD graduates/applicants out there, one question for you.

WHAT IS INSEAD KNOWN FOR?

to me its known for spending $$$$$ on marketing itself, zero achievements in research, average faculty at best, very limited choice of electives, prison style campus in Singapore.

the truth is INSEAD is going down in rankings quickly, they are a well oiled marketing machine with few high profile graduates. I looked at them very carefuly because I was under the impression they were the best in Asia. Clearly not the case, but for someone who is going to work in Europe/US after graduation it might be.

Buddy, I don't intend to get into a childish post flaming here. If you had the impression that I have misinterpreted your opinion then I am sorry. I don't care about what others think about a particular school if it fulfilled and exceeded my personal expectations. You probably are very proud about your school you attended. Congratulations! Probably you paid a lot, as well. You should be proud, then!
There are many good schools out there and I am sure that HKUST might be excellent. However you may possibly lower your voice on things you have no clue about, that's my personal mantra.
I suggest you might read some interesting diary blogs on blogspot. there are good ones about INSEAD, Stanford, Columbia, LBS etc. that are very close to truth. This should give you broad perspective on other MBA programs.

Buddy, I don't know your age, but either you are a serious fanboy of your school or you have an personal inferiority complex.
I already feel sorry that I have posted in this forum, and therefore I leave to do more important things. Bye!

To the person using various identities/usernames and staging fake "discussions" about how great HKUST is and how bad INSEAD is: I don't know if you get paid by HKUST to do this (which would shed a new light on its marketing techniques). But please stop, you are boring everybody on this forum to death!
