ESMT

hello all, have been contemplating about ESMT program. theoretically it seems to have good support of 25 strong founding companies, not sure how much those companies are interested, coz thy do not seems to be recruiting from ESMT as of now !

The program has gained all major accreditations and as per school will appear in all full time rankings in next 2-3 years. Anybody has any local/ insider information about - the overall quality of institute and reputation in Germany as of now !

- the placement statistics seems to be encouraging but more then 10% of the class consists of sponsored candidates and hence goes back to same employer at higher salary, so adjusting that, not sure how lucrative is German market for expats with basic knowledge of German, especially in Consulting, Business Development roles. Can anyone share his/her experiences of job market in general for MBA grads in Germany

- the faculty at ESMT seems to be better then WHU or Mannheim but not sure if faculty plays active role in giving specific technical/ personal/ career guidance to students at ESMT. If someone knows someone at ESMT or someone from ESMT can comment about this aspect, would be great

Though I'm not a big fan of comparing things, but still tempted to compare St. Gallen v/s ESMT, now and 4-5 years down the line (if anybody can predict !!)

Thanks in anticipation.

I think ESMT compares favorably with St. Gallen, and will become more competitive with it in the next few years.

St. Gallen shows up on the global rankings mainly because of the school's strong post-MBA salary data - but in my opinion, this is influenced more by location: salaries and cost of living are generally higher in Switzerland than in Germany. Of course, this will shift if the German economy continues to grow.

If you do the ESMT program, definitely make a point of working on your language skills - as is clear from other posts here, this is a very important factor in landing a job in Germany post-graduation.

thanks for the response Ezra. I agree about salary data for St. Gallen and which also happens to be true for IMD to certain extent. However due to older legacy, I believe IMD is in a different league then ESMT or St. Gallen. IMD grads land up sr. management jobs with strategic roles whereas from St. Gallen, ESMT or even HEC I have observed that roles offered are more operational or regional in nature then strategic/ global. Let me know your views on this aspect.

Considering the fact that Germany is the largest and perhaps growing economy in Europe currently and will remain so in near future, so do you think perception/ acceptability of MBAs in general with German co.s for global roles in Germany is in general improving?

My concern was ESMT like HEC or IMD is founded by business, but unlike HEC or IMD those founding co.s are not active recruiters as of now. Most of them not even send their employees their for Exec programs, so this kind of discord worries me !

Hope to hear more from you.

Hi to everybody!
I'm here to ask an advice!! What is better ESMT or Manheim?
I'll be apply for 2013 intake. I am Russian female 31 , 8 y.w.e, but have no international experience. GMAT only 620 (the same in two attempts), the last Q-47, V-28, AWA - 4, IR-8. I hope to land job in Germany, now I study language from the begginer level.
Could anybody help me to understand the real situation about ESMT? Are the data of its employment stutistic real? Does the School have strong perfomance in Germany?
ESMT seems to be less tough in aplication process, but could anybody give the opinion about the comparison of these two schools - ESMT and Manheim? Which ROI is higher? What do you think?
Thanks in advance!

Mannheim is traditionally the better school, and according to career statistics will probably give you a better salary post-graduation. They have good placements through relationships with tech companies like Siemens and Deutsche Telekom as well as some management consulting firms.

ESMT is more of an "up-and-coming" program, and recruits into similar industry realms.

Keep in mind that Germany has a tough job market to crack for those from outside the country. Something like 40% of Mannheim MBA grads end up not working in the country. Your success will depend on your language skills and networking. Berlin will probably be more of a challenge, in general, just because of the employment trends, industry presence, etc.

Average salaries at ESMT was ? 73,563 last year. My bet is that's higher than Mannheim, and the cost of living in Berlin is lower than Mannheim. My feeling is that Mannheim is a safer bet, especially if you're considering working outside Germany, but I think that Berlin will be much easier betting for a Russian: many people over 30 speak Russian ;-)

According to Businessweek, average salaries at graduation for Mannheim alum tend to be $104k (79k EUR.)

That said, 73k EUR for ESMT grads is pretty good, but I'm not sure how many of them get that kind of money in Berlin.

Wow -- that's really impressive for both schools. It's *base* salaries at ESMT that were ? 73,563. Average compensation was ? 80,525. Very impressive. 60% are in Germany, so I guess ten percent or so might be in Berlin.

Hi,
I suggest you to contact ESMT Career Service manager:

http://www.esmt.org/eng/mba-emba/career-services/

I personally talked with him 1 year ago and he, frankly, told to me not to pay much attention to their career stats (especially if your are not German or if you can't speak German).

It's a small school, and only ten years old. It has a very high reputation with its major sponsors like Allianz, Deutsche Bank, E.ON and Siemens. Their MiM degree will be excellent.

ESMT isn't perhaps the strongest brand for aviation. In terms of Lufthansa, I image your target might be Lufthansa Technik or Lufthansa Systems rather than the airline's consumer business. Either way, these firms are strongly rooted in the former West Germany rather than Berlin. They will tend to hire German-speakers from Technical Universities. They are not major hirers of MBAs or MiM graduates. I think a more effective route in will be to take an intensive Germany course for a year (I assume you don't have a professional level of German) in Hamburg, Munich or Stuttgart. And then look for an MSc, perhaps in English (e.g. Aerospace Engineering (MSc) at FH Aachen) but better in German (e.g. Munich University of Technology, Munich University of the Federal Armed Forces, University of Stuttgart).

hai..I am not interested in the engineering part any more and would like to shift to the managerial part of aircraft manufacturing sections.I am contemplating on taking supply chain logistics MIM programs or rather specialise in operations which could give me an entry into the operations part of the industry. Are there any good Masters in logistics program in Germany? How good could be the Kuehlne LOgistics uniersities,KLU's MSc Global Logistics program? There is an option with ESMT's MIM to specialise in Supply chain logistics, should I be eyeing for that or are there any better options than that?

Hi Sarat. It's very hard to shift role and country at the same time, especially if you don't speak the language. The The ESMT course isn;'t the best for a specialisation, because there's only a year of teaching. You'll be much more effective at that taking a German-language MSc. The Kühne school is good, but Hamburg is a shipping hub and the programme is in English.

I think it will be easier for you to move 'diagonally'. Move to Germany in the same role, and then later move into management. Or move into management and only later move to Germany. Either way, start learning German.

Have you considered studying in Toulouse? That's a huge EADS hub, and French is easier to learn than German.

Hai Duncan..ya I did consider Touluse as well, but I am also giving priority to the economic situations of countries as well.France is in a turmoil at the moment and Germany's economy is on the high, also France has only 6 months stay back option for Non-EU's compared to Germany's 18 months. So keeping all these things into consideration I thought Germany would be a wise idea.Thing is that I am not at all interested for a masters in engineering any more and I don't enjoy the role anymore;so the only option which I am going with are the Masters in management programs whether it's in general management or international business or logistics or marketing, but not sure which college or rather which program would suit me the best.Any more inputs would be helpful.Thank you for all those tips untill.
