Luxury & Luxury Brand Management

Duncan

I had a question recently about luxury MBAs (which I think generally are not effective entry routes into the luxury industry). I've gathered together the best posts on that topic below. I think the same points also apply to many creative sectors, such as fashion, art or music:

Hi my name is Camilo from Colombiai would like to do an MBA for the luxury business. I ve been looking for universities in France ( i love the country. i lived there 6 years ago) and ISC is my top option.

I have a degree in Finance and International Affairs and i ve been working in banking marketing my hole carreer. Nevertheless my family is the owner of a Cosmetics Company here in Colombia, even if i ve been working in the banking sector my real passion is my family buisness and fashion.

I have the finanacial and admisitrative background already, i would like and MBA that is going to be able to teach me all i need to succed in the fashion cosmetics industry. And more important a programe that can conect me with top companies from the industry.

Although i have a company to work for here in Colombia , i would like to continue to get experience from other companies in order to print that experience into my business, not only getting and intership but also getting a job for at leat one year after the mba is done.

I would really appreciate if you can help me with options or at least why do you think that the programe offered by ISC in partnership with Mod Art is not good.

thanks for you help

Hi Camilo. I've linked to some posts above, and won't repeat that. If you want to get connections with cosmetics and fashion companies in France, then you should attend one of the schools that's best connected there: ESSEC, ESCP, HEC, EDHEC, EM Lyon.... ISC has a tiny alumni base even in those industries in France.

Hello all
I’m 20 year old graduate in bba from india. I so wanted to do my bachelors in fashion but ended up doing bba for my masters now I’m interested in luxury brand management. I came across many colleges in Milan , Paris , London. I came across one course which sp Jain school of global management is offering which is masters in global luxury goods and service management I likes the course it’s 6 months in Mumbai the other 4 months in Politecnico di Milano MIP (Milan )and then internship in any of the countries it’s a 12 month course. I loved everything about the course but my main concern is about the future options after the course as my funding would be from loans. I don’t mind working in Milan or in Mumbai. But are placements good after the course ? Is it worth spending so much?
I had a word with alumni of the course some are positive and some are negative. I’m confused! Placements are mostly offered to students with work experience. Freshers find difficult to get jobs ! Higher loans and less salary makes no sense. I have no plans for settling back in Milan or so. So wanted a course where I get international exposure also. Can anyone please throw some light on this. Is it worth doing it from sp Jain ? Or I should simply go for mba ?

Thankyou

Luxury is a difficult business to break into, especially if you don't have experience in the industry already. Luxury firms don't actively seek out MBAs like other industries like consulting, finance, etc.

I'd say focus on your goals and consider a backup plan, considering all your options. Choose a strong school close to a luxury hub (HEC Paris for instance) and try to do a consulting project / internship with a luxury firm.
