The University

The university traces its academic roots as far back as the late 19th century through two separate schools, the Jesuit-run Loyola College and the YMCA-based Sir George Williams University. Concordia University was created in 1974 upon the merger of these two institutions.[8] The name of the university is derived from Concordia Salus, the motto of the City of Montreal. The motto means Well-being through harmony.[9]

In the 2008 edition of the annual Times Higher Education Supplement-Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings, Concordia ranked 20th in Canada and 357th internationally.[10]. According to a worldwide ranking by the École des Mines de Paris, Concordia ranks first among Canadian and 33rd among world universities in terms of graduates occupying the rank of Chief Executive Officer at Fortune 500 companies.[11] The University is also acknowledged as being one of the top engineering schools in the country.

The Business School

The John Molson School of Business at Concordia University in Montreal is one of the top business schools in Canada as ranked by Corporate Knights [1] in 2008. With over 6,500 undergraduate students, 1200 graduate students and 36,000 alumni. The business school offers 15 different programs from five different departments: Accountancy, Decision Sciences and MIS, Finance, Management and Marketing. The Bachelor of Commerce (BComm) and the Bachelor of Administration (BAdmin) are offered at the Undergraduate level. Graduate level programs include the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Executive MBA (EMBA), MBA with Complete CFA Concentration, Master of Science in Administration (MSc), PHd and Diploma in Chartered Accountancy (CA). The business school is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

Rankings in 2009:
Concordia University and JMSB ranked #1 in Canada again this year for preparing its students for business leadership according to a world-wide ranking by the prestigious École des Mines de Paris (August 2009). Among Canadian universities, Concordia has the highest number of graduates holding a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) position in a Global Fortune 500 company.

The MBA program ranked #1 in Quebec and in the Top 3 in Canada in the sixth-annual Knights School Survey published by the Corporate Knights Canadian magazine, ranking on Corporate Social Responsibility in July 2009.

JMSB MBA ranked 3rd in Canada by the Aspen Institute (Beyond Grey Pinstripes ranking survey. The school has ranked 34th on a list of the Top 100 business schools worldwide; 3rd in Canada. In the category of faculty research, the John Molson School of Business has placed 9th in the world.
