U.Porto is the largest education and research institution in Portugal and one of the 250 worldwide universities (Times Higher Education Ranking, 2010).
More than 31000 student (3000 of which are foreigners, from around 80 nationalities), 2300 teachers and researchers along with 1700 administrative staff work in the 15 schools and 60 research units of U.Porto, spread across 3 university campuses located in the city of Porto.

The Business School

EGP-University of Porto Business School
EGP-UPBS is the only school in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula to have received two accreditations (AMBA and EPAS) for its MBA programmes (The Magellan MBA and the Executive MBA).
In 2011, EGP-UPBS entered into the top 100 worldwide - at number 65 - of the Financial Times Executive Education Ranking.
With more than 8000 alumni, the school ensures an extensive access to a strong business network.
Along with its MBA Programmes, EGP-UPBS also offers a wide range of short term and in-company customised programmes and a complete set of post-graduate programmes.
The Program
The Magellan MBAThe Magellan MBA is an international programme that requires risk taking, teamwork and entrepreneurship. It will challenges your abilities and take you to new horizons. Prepare for your journey.
The Magellan MBA is a full-time 14 month programme that is aimed at fast-tracking professionals that, regardless of their past academic background, seek to develop a career in management with a strong international perspective.
The programme is structured to enable the students to become proficient in general management and well trained in specific functional management areas, such as Marketing, Operations, Finance & Accounting, Organisational Development and International Business. Significant attention is also given to soft skills training throughout the programme, to ensure that managerial knowledge goes hand in hand with the growth of individual skills, such as personal communication, leadership and negotiation.
In The Magellan MBA Programme, international professors use innovative teaching methods to present cutting edge ideas and real business applications. Faculty have extensive experience in management and consulting at organizations around the world.
Each year students attend an international week of training in a renowned business school outside of Portugal. At the end of the programme all students participate in one of the following programmes of their choice: a company internship or a new business project, all two of which test and solidify skills in management.
The Faculty
The Magellan MBA FacultyGiven the dynamic nature of the programme and our response to the needs and requests from students, we are able to make changes in the courses and faculty every year, and we carefully select over 30 internationally trained professors to teach in the Magellan programme. All of the Magellan faculty have advanced degrees (90% have Ph.D.s) in the field of business management, awarded by leading business and management schools in the world.
Many faculty members travel to the Magellan programme from the US, Latin America or Western Europe, bringing to the classroom the most current international perspective and know-how. To ensure market relevance and highly practical approach in teaching, the faculty have experience in management as either managers or consultants to organisations and companies worldwide.
Entry Requirements
1. EligibilityTo be eligible to the programme, applicants must
- Hold a degree (or equivalent) from an accredited university
- Be fluent in the English language
- Possess at least three years of work experience
- Provide a GMAT/GRE test score
- Show evidence of financial sustainability during the full length of the MBA programme

The GMAT/GRE score is an important element in each candidate's evaluation process, but selection is never based on this alone. A lower score does not automatically eliminate a candidate, but it is worth noting that GMAT/GRE scores of students enrolled in past editions have frequently been around 600.
Application Procedure

2. Application Content
Your application process must contain the following documentation:
- Online application with curriculum vitae, three essays, and two reference letters.
- Academic transcripts
- Certificate of proficiency in the English language issued by TOEFL, IELTS and the British Council, American Language Institute, or other institution considered credible by the Magellan MBA Admissions Committee
- Results of the GMAT/GRE
After review of submitted documentation, eligible candidates will be interviewed by The Magellan MBA Admissions Committee. The interview is mandatory to proceed in the application process.
3. Scholarships
The Magellan MBA Board offers a limited number of scholarships. Interested candidates, especially non-Portuguese applicants from developing countries, will receive priority in the scholarship award consideration, and are encouraged to apply before the end of March not just to increase the chances of getting one of the scholarships available (covering from 25% up to 75% of the programme fees). Scholarships do not cover room, board or travelling expenses.
The following criteria will guide the Admissions Committee in the selection of the scholarship recipients: acceptance to the programme, GMAT/GRE score, country of origin, previous academic and professional records, and financial situation. 4. Reference Letters
Two reference letters are requested by the Admissions Committee, one from a faculty member familiar with the candidate's academic career, and another by his or her manager or business associate familiar with the applicant's professional career and progress. The admissions committee reserves the right to contact the referees for further clarification.
5. GMAT and GRE
The GMAT Test may be taken at the Galileu training centre in Lisbon, or at the CESAE training centre in Porto, as well as at any other centre in the world. The test date is flexible, and may be scheduled by telephone. Please visit www.mba.com , the official GMAT web site, to learn more details. The GMAT score is one of various selection criteria used by the Admissions Committee, but selection is never based on this alone. A lower score does not automatically eliminate a candidate, but it is worth noting that the average GMAT is expected to exceed 600.

6. Proficiency in English
To verify proficiency in English, each applicant is required to take IELTS, TOEFL or other ESL (English as a Second Language) test considered credible by the Admissions Committee. Foreign nationals whose native language is English or who graduated from universities where English is the language of instruction, are exempt from the English proficiency tests.
Please note that test results are integral parts of the application and need to be submitted in order for the application to be complete and ready for review.
Tuition and Fees
1st phase, until the 31st of March - 18500 euros2nd phase, until the 30th of June - 21000 euros
In both cases, the tuition fee includes all course materials, Team Management courses outdoor costs and International Week expenses (tuition, travel and lodging).
The fees scheduling is as follows:
1st Phase of applications:
- 3500 € in the foundation period
- 5000 € on the beginning of the first, second and third Terms
2nd Phase of applications:
- 4500€ in the foundation period
- 5500€ on the beginning on the first, second and third Terms

Location

The EGP-University of Porto Business School campus is located in Rua de Salazares, in Porto. The facilities include modern amphitheatres and smaller classrooms, an auditorium, student work rooms, a restaurant and bar, a reprographics centre, an Information Resources Centre and an administrative office. The campus has full wireless internet access and state of the art information systems. The green surroundings of the facilities ensure a quiet and relaxing working atmosphere and easy parking facilities.
EGP-UPBS is located in a green setting 15 minutes from the city centre, 10 minutes from the beach and airport and 5 minutes from the City park.
Accommodation
Student Support ServicesThe International Office provides personalised assistance and advising services to The Magellan MBA international students (and their families) before and after their arrival in Portugal. This customised service makes students’ lives easier and provides guidance in matters related to VISA, Immigration Office, accommodation, medical care, insurance, public transportation, Portuguese language courses, welfare, social and cultural integration, etc.
Students from outside of the European Union are required to obtain a VISA prior to their arrival. The International Office is available to give useful advice and information about VISA requirements.
Assistance is offered to help students find individual or shared accommodation close to the School, either by booking accommodation at the facilities of the University of Porto or helping to find a private solution in the city, such as a shared flat.
Porto records one of the lowest costs of living in Western Europe, from 450 to 600 Euros a month depending if you want to rent a room or share a flat.
