Business Mentoring

The MBA program is designed for students with limited work experience. As a way of assisting your career progression and increasing your employment opportunities, the MBA includes a Business Mentoring Program. Our business mentors all have at least 15 years experience, are leaders in their fields and provide guidance and support to prepare you for your working life. Students work with their business mentors throughout the MBA program but this engagement is also formalised through the course Work and Careers.

Students will engage in a range of activities including seminars with guest speakers, group work and case studies, individual mentoring and coaching and career preparation.

The mentoring program covers:

  • Leadership in the workplace
  • Power and influence
  • Judgement in decision making
  • Career and self management
  • Working in Australian organisations
  • Working in Asia
  • Working in a family business

Teaching and learning approach

Taking its cues from graduate employment programs, the MBA is predicated upon a structured approach to the accumulation of knowledge and skills. Courses are sequenced with more sophisticated analysis and deeper integration of material delivered later in the program.

For example, courses in strategy development that require an understanding of business analysis, marketing and finance are scheduled after functional courses introducing these concepts so that students can draw upon these skills in creating strategy activities. Likewise, you first learn about your own development, strengths and style as a manager and leader before moving to the critical issues involved in managing and leading others. Courses that bring a range of activities together, such as the MBA Research Project and Implementing Strategy are undertaken at the end of the program and are an opportunity to showcase your business expertise.

Students move through the program as a cohort, work in teams and benefit from the additional insights and understandings that come from interaction with classmates who have similar aspirations but come from a diverse range of disciplinary and personal backgrounds. Orientation and social activities encourage the development of study circles and instil the value of networking. Some students have even continued their association after graduation and established small businesses together.

Classes are normally a combination of lectures and tutorials but also include seminars, simulations and site visits. Lectures deliver a comprehensive review of the latest thinking and world’s best practice whilst tutorials provide opportunities for facilitated discussion as students explore the way issues unfold in the business environment. Factually based case studies, a key feature of successful quality MBA programs worldwide, are an important component of our courses and add further realism to the learning experience.

Assessment is undertaken via a combination of group and individual assignments, student presentations and examinations. Whilst group assignments are an important component of every course the focus of the assessment is weighted towards individual performance.
