Description
Setting
The economy of the Russian Federation is rapidly evolving from a state controlled plan economy aimed at the local market into a free market economy within the international economic system. Foreign investments are increasing substantially. More and more foreign companies start working in the Russian market, have their representatives in Russia and enroll Russian employees. On the other hand, Russian companies make increasing efforts for co-operation with foreign firms, entering international markets and making business abroad.

The development of this fundamental process results in an increasing need for managers with up-to-date knowledge of modern managerial methods and techniques. There exists a basic demand for advanced management education and regular retraining of the executive managers.

To meet this demand, UAMS (Management School of the University of Antwerp -Belgium) and the Institute of Business Studies of the Academy of National Economy under the Government of the Russian Federation (Moscow) joined their efforts to create an Executive MBA programme of the highest quality.

Content
The programme is taught over 3 semesters and comprises 700 academic hours. It is a part-time programme, with evening classes (4 academic hours each) twice a week, and Saturday classes (8 academic hours each) twice a month.
The programme has two languages of instruction: Russian and English. 70 per cent of classes are held by Russian professors of the Academy of National Economy, Moscow State University, Higher School of Economics and other leading Moscow universities. Intensive one-week residential programme in Antwerp is scheduled for the 3-d semester.

Most tests and exams are written and administered in English. They are then forwarded to Antwerp for evaluation by UAMS professors. Oral examinations (in English), administered by UAMS professors, are used when necessary. The programme is concluded by the team work on Business Master Project, which is to be presented to the jury of UAMS professors.

The participants are provided with relevant study materials, both in English and Russian, and have full access to the necessary library resources for each course module. The programme makes use of advanced teaching methods, including case-studies, business games, computer and video presentations.

Programme Philosophy
The Executive MBA programme aims at training 'generalists' and contributes to de-specialization. The programme offers advanced insights into all major functional fields of modern management. In addition, it:
  • Gives the manager a clear idea of the integration and interrelations of these specific functional areas, and presents a view of the complex relationships between a company and its social and economic environment;
  • Shows that the formulation of any business problem and the problem solving process itself are always rooted in the needs and strategic perspectives of the individual company viewed in its integrity, and
  • Develops analytical skills and the ability of making important strategic decisions.
There are fewer courses in the Executive MBA than in an ordinary MBA, but they are more integrated. Cases are less formal, more open-ended and presume non-trivial solutions. Wherever possible, a team approach is used. And last, but not least, whatever topic is under consideration in the classroom at the moment, the practical business experience of the participants should contribute to the discussion.

Partnerships
The Institute of Business Studies (IBS-Moscow) which was earlier called the International Business School- is one of the first business schools in Russia, it was based in 1989. During the whole period of its existence IBS emphasized international cooperation and was always ranked one of the first Russian business schools. In 1994 IBS joined the Academy of National Economy under the government of RF. The experience of ANE in the fields of retraining managers helped IBS to gain unique competence necessary for conducting an international Executive MBA programme. (http://www.ibs-m.ru/)

Babcock Graduate School of Management at Wake Forrest University,  one of the first-rated business schools of the USA, can be called an unofficial partner of UAMS and IBS. The Executive MBA programme provided a constant base for cooperation between IBS and the Babcock Graduate School of Management
