MBA Philosophy
The Canterbury MBA is not just a superb academic degree. This programme seeks to develop leaders who trust themselves and work well with others.
Students come to this programme at a decision point in their lives, wishing to change and understand more. Many Canterbury MBA graduates take up positions in which they will be responsible for the economic lives of others. These positions require people to have confidence in their abilities, continuously hone their judgement and understand the importance of timing.
To achieve this, the programme balances a rigorous academic course with a high degree of interaction with businesses and one's peers. Courses and workshops address key issues of character/self and relationships with others. A high degree of student interaction in lectures and practice in group dynamics, decision making and presenting is encouraged.
Our emphasis
- Developing leaders , not merely managers, or administrators.
- Developing versatility and innovativeness.
- Developing entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial all-rounders that can operate in multi-functional roles in small to medium sized companies (SMEs) as well as in a smaller economic and infrastructural environment or corporate entities.
- Imparting an international awareness and outreach.
- Attention to environmental, social and financial sustainability in business, operations and all dealings.
- Addressing real issues facing business people in New Zealand, such as the need to understand how to do business throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
MBA objectives
By the end of the Programme, each person will have:
- Honed their leadership abilities.
- Become proficient in leading and managing various kinds of organisations in turbulent, entrepreneurial or larger corporate contexts.
- Multi-functional management skills and techniques.
- Applied that knowledge to a wide range of cases and problems.
- Completed a real-time project for a local, national, international organisation, government agency or non-profit entity.
- Demonstrated an understanding of how each management function relates to the others; thus developing a sense of "the big picture".
- Worked in a team to achieve desired results.
- Worked under pressure, prioritised assignments and tasks, and met deadlines.

MBA Process
The MBA is a challenging degree drawing on such personal attributes as tenacity, initiative, tolerance, and their willingness to learn from mistakes and to work with others.
Mode of teaching
The Canterbury MBA caters to both full time and part time students. See the programme structure for more information.
Lectures
Regular lectures provide an excellent opportunity for class interaction. By participating fully, you learn from each other's questions and shared experience. Lectures take place in the late afternooon and early evening to enable those who work during the day to attend.
Groups
Organisational members are increasingly expected to achieve results in formal or informal work teams. Therefore Canterbury MBA students practise achieving results with others. Groups are changed each term providing students with the opportunity of working with most people on the Programme.
Teaching methods
Case studies are used extensively as they provide an opportunity to practise analytical techniques and provide experience of committing to a course of action. In addition students visit Christchurch organisations, work through simulation exercises, and investigate immediate organisational issues. Business leaders share their experiences with the class.
Assessment
Assessment is based on group and individual analysis of case studies, written assignments, presentations, and participation in class and examinations. The maximum weighting for group work is 40 percent.
