Message from the Director

We understand that the decision to strength your professional degree through a MBA program is complex and difficult. The asymmetry and the excess of information, the amount of options and the short time are elements that complicates the decision. The offer is extense and it is very attractive, nevertheless, we think that not only it concerns the public value of a MBA program, also, is the personal value the one

that finally marks the difference.

A MBA has two faces; one is the public value or the one that the society gives, in where the type of program, the place, the brand and the seal of the institution that dictates it are of vital importance.

The other face is the personal or private value that a student can obtain from a MBA, this means, the formation not only in hard abilities, but also in soft abilities like work in equipment, leadership, conscience of its development of degree, a close relation with faculty of first level, participation in projects of undertaking been born during your MBA and the involvement in the Search and Development Centers, are elements that, with no doubt, not only harnessed your degree and also will give a turn of 180º and will change your form to see, and not only watch, the world that surrounds you.

Escuela de Negocios de Valparaíso

Viña del Mar

In 1953, the Valparaíso School of Business was founded, based on the vision of one of the most prominent entrepreneurs of the time, Mr. Adolfo Ibáñez Boggiano. Its goal was to form competent businessmen endowed with sound management skills and solid humanistic instruction. Later on this school gave birth to Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez that, at present, offers degrees in four areas, all related to managerial activity.

From its beginning, the School of Business has formed graduates endowed with a remarkable managerial spirit and skills, which are reflected in the leading positions they have attained, either in private business or in public service organizations.

More than 3.000 graduates of our MBA programs attest to the consistency and prestige of the School of Business, both in Chile and abroad. In addition, more than 12.000 executives have attended our seminars, diplomas and continual education, coming from many different countries in Latin America. Through its graduates, the School of Business has achieved a significant role in the development of the Chilean economy and Latin American firms.

After fifty years of service, the Valparaiso School of Business has firmly consolidated its reputation. Mr. Ricardo Lagos, President of the Republic of Chile, qualified our university as “a leading and innovative institution”. These characteristics will guide us in the next fifty years.

Entrepreneurial Spirit

An entrepreneurial spirit involves not only becoming a manager and creating a company, but also acting as an intrapreneurial executive, capable of originating change and innovation inside an organization. Whether speaking of future entrepreneurs or intrapreneurs, developing managerial abilities in students is an important goal of the School of Business.

For 50 years, la Escuela de Negocios de Valparaíso has offered a model for entrepreneurial behavior, defining it as “the search for opportunities beyond common and controllable resources, and a form of leadership that brings value”. The major challenge that an entrepreneurial businessman faces is to achieve objectives with limited resources under conditions of great uncertainty. The School’s commitment is to create human capital capable of facing the challenges in a fast-changing world environment.

An Entrepreneurship Center has been established to coordinate and promote this culture and spirit. It also aims to strengthen and focus the latent entrepreneurial capabilities in all students. We believe that in a world of open markets and complex situations, economic development will depend more and more on people and organizations with entrepreneurial capabilities. The Entrepreneurship Center develops this spirit through courses inspired by American and European course models, by organizing business plan competitions, by using the “company incubator “ and by researching entrepreneurial topics.

Students of the MBA International Programme . are immersed in an environment that constantly promotes entrepreneurship. The whole program and our faculty’s background will ensure that students participate in the best possible environment for the creation of entrepreneurial values.

One of the academic activities of our MBA is for our students to develop business plans which allow them to experience the creation of a company. These projects are submitted to Octantis, our incubator of business. This incubator provides the infrastructure, networking and consistency, which turns a good idea into a good business.

Our vision is to help students create viable companies that generate wealth and employment for the economies of the region.

Innovative Spirit

The MBA International Programme is built on three basic, academic foundations. First, the School of Business of Valparaíso’s half century of experience in the formation of Chilean and Latin American businessmen. Second, an ongoing " benchmarking " with the best MBA programs in the world. And third, permanent communication with companies and their managers, through professors and Research & Development Centers, to update business practices.

The program stresses action, innovation, participation and focus in the formation of Latin America’s future business leaders. Knowledge, good judgement and an international orientation are critical elements.

The MBA International Programme incorporates new teaching methods that reflect an integrated vision of the company. Highlights include: the case method, simulation exercises, group debates, teamwork, presentations, consulting and application workshops.

An Intensive Year: A Unique Experience

Total commitment is a distinctive feature of a full-time MBA. In contrast to part-time alternatives, the full-time MBA demands a high level of dedication. Most of the best-known MBAs in the world are full-time programs. Following are some advantages of full-time programs:

? The unique experience of complete immersion in a graduate environment, enhancing close interaction among professors and students.

? The cultural diversity that results from the participation of students coming from different countries, a key feature in the MBA International Programme experience.

? The international MBA program’s academic network, which brings to the program the support of outstanding foreign professors, as well as exchange agreements and projects with top business schools and universities from around the world.

? The opportunity to obtain a prestigious degree in just one full year of study.

? The possibility to study an MBA at a young age, thus enabling the graduate to embark on a professional career sooner.

Because the MBA International Programme is an intensive program, it is possible to cover more than 1,200 hours of the academic curriculum in twelve month’s time. Each of these academic hours is carefully planned in order to maximize their benefit to the student. Very respectful of students' investment in time and resources, we have developed this program within a twelve month time frame by minimizing distactions and lost classroom time.

As a result of this full-time dedication, our students gain an intensive academic and life experience, instilling in them a strong work capacity and a clear profile of leadership.

International Consulting: WHARTON GLOBAL CONSULTING PRACTICUM (WGCP)

The main objective of the WGCP Wharton –UAI alliance is to enable the students of the MBA International Programme and the students of the MBA of The Wharton School to have the experience of being part of a consultant team. As a result, they will be able to develop projects that help Chilean and Latin American companies to penetrate the competitive North American market.

The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania has been recognized by Business Week magazine as the number one school of business in the United States during the past eight years. This school has formed an alliance with the MBA International Programme of the Valparaíso School of Business to develop consulting projects for Latin American companies that want to introduce their products or services in the North American market.

Each Wharton - UAI MBA IP consulting team, formed by 10 students - 5 from each school, carries out a consulting project for a period of six months, with the help of outstanding professors from both schools. This team holds periodic meetings with clients to provide updated information about the project.

During this period, distribution channels, price stratergies, positioning strategies, communications strategies, and prioritizing products and their associated costs are all defined. The final report and presentation to the clients ends with the team's participation in the May Colloquium, an analysis and workshop event organized by Wharton in early May in Philadelphia. The clients from different countries, the consulting team, the professors and Wharton's partners meet to analyze and discuss the proposals, and put into practice the consulting team's recommendations.

As a result of these consulting projects, many companies have been able to introduce their products and services into the competitive North American market, generating revenues superior to US$300 million dollars.

Dual Degree

The regular students of the MBA International Programme, once graduated, have two alternatives of Dual Degree:

They can obtain a double degree with Thunderbird, The American Graduate School of International Management, which will allow the participants to complete the MBA International Programme, like the MIM

(Masters in International Management) of Thunderbird in less time than separately. The program consists of taking a minimum from 30 credits hour in Thunderbird, which takes approximately 6 months. The American

Graduate School of International Management is recognized like the school leader world-wide level in International Managemet.

The other option of double degree is with Weatherhead School of Management, CASE Western Reserve University, recognized like the school leader in Human Research. This double degree demands one more year of studies after the MBA International Programme.

In both schools, students who make dual degree will count with the corresponding services that the school has each one of the regular students, as the case of Career Management Service at the end of his studies.

Final Project

The MBA International Programme's main feature is its practical and innovative focus. For this reason, there is a special, final requirement to obtain the degree. This activity requires the student to apply all the tools in the different areas of business, to demonstrate both interpersonal and teamwork abilities, and, above all, to use his/her professional skills with clients.

Students have the option to select from four practical-type projects, all designed to add value to the different companies or entities that have submitted their needs to these consulting groups. The four alternatives are:

Regional consulting projects

Companies submit their projects to the MBA International Programme and the Programme selects the most interesting ones. This signifies an important investment in time and money for the participanting companies, and, for that reason, they demand concrete and feasible results. The students work directly with the client company, acting as a consulting team interviewing executives and gathering the necessary information to carry out the project. The consulting team is comprised of a group of students that dedicate approximately five months to this consulting work. For their part, students can choose the topics that interest them, and , very often, the consulting projects become a form of specialization for the students.

Consulting project clients have included Banco Santander, Goodyear, Xerox, General Motors, Bosch, Edelnor Perú, Telefónica and many others.

Business Plans

As a way of enhancing our school entrepreneurial spirit in our students, they have to present business plans, submitting their ideas as a team. A committee selects the best developed ones, using the criteria of ideas, practicality and entrepreneurship by the team. In addition, after graduating, teams that have a marked interest in developing their ideas for business may apply to our business incubator, where they will receive support in the early stages of their business plan. This activity permits entrepreneurial students to develop a true managerial spirit, a trademark of our graduates.

Case Studies

Given Valparaíso School of Business’s leading role in the context of Latin American academic activity, the MBA International Programme has established as an alternative final project the production of case studies of Latin American companies. Groups of 4 or 5 students, guided by outstanding professors, prepare the case studies.

The case study is completely practical. The students act as consultants giving their clients their opinions about where their company is and where it is heading.

In the year 2002 two cases were written: Falabella, "Growth of the Falabella Group and their Process of Internationalization” and LanChile, "Restructuring the Distribution Channel: LanChile.com". Both have represented important contributions for the companies and for the School of Business. Today they continue to be used as case studies for different academic programs.

Curriculum Structure

Gonzalo Jiménez

Professor

The continuous contact between our professors and the best business schools

in the world results in a permanent updating of the contents of the MBA

International Programme. The main features of the structure and

contents of the program include:

Modular Conception

Different from the old and rigid conception of six-month periods, the MBA International Programme contains a modern

structure consisting of six modules with a duration of 5 to 9 weeks. This structure gives the student regular feedback, and has been adopted by many top MBAs in the world. The first four modules constitute the core of

the program and focus on fundamental management subjects. The last two modules are elective courses, giving the students the opportunity to

increase their knowledge in specific areas of interest.

Matrix Structure

Subject areas and the temporary modules feature the program structural curriculum matrix. A carefully planned coordination, both at the vertical level (per modules) and at the horizontal level (subject area), produces an interdisciplinary integration.

International Business Workshops: Through these workshops, students receive training in the different cultures and business practices around the world. These workshops cover blocks such as Latin America, Pacific - Asia, Europe, USA and Canada.

Business Games on Computers: Cases and "role playing"exercises, throughout the whole program, act as an integrative channel for different areas of study, providing a global vision of business management.

Creating Business Plans: Give the students the chance to develop business plans of their own, applying their abilities and knowledge with the possibility of submitting their ideas to our business incubator.

Consulting Projects: These allow the student to be inserted into the reality of a company in Latin America and to apply their experience and acquired knowledge directly as this real client's professional consultant.

Business Placement Center

Loreto Larraín

Business Placement Center

The Business Placement Center at the Escuela de Negocios de Valparaíso has been designed to help students by orienting them about professional careers. The Center personalizes this service to students, putting emphasis on the characteristics and qualities needed to be successful in particular careers.

Career Development

Throughout the MBA academic year, various activities organized to prepare students for their professional careers.

-360º Evaluation : based on a questionnaire about their professional reality, students are evaluated by their previous bosses, subordinates, and classmates, as well as a self-evaluation, to establish an accurate analysis of strengths and weaknesses in their professional environment.

- DBM (Drake, Bean & Morin) Qualification and Training : Thanks to an alliance with our MBA Programme, the international leader in outplacement, America DBM, will conduct five modules on training students in strategies related to professional careers. Individual orientation sessions will also be held.

Finally, during this MBA academic year, our students will not only have increased their managerial expertise, but will also have experienced a self-evaluation that will help them to find an appropriate professional career path.

Placement

The Business Placement Center has developed a series of activities designed to motivate and support our students so that they become mentors of their own professional destiny and linked to concrete job opportunities. Through these activities the following objectives are met:

Individual counseling: Each student can count on the Business Placement Center for advice regarding the labor market. We have contacts with the main headhunting companies in Chile and Latin America.

-Training to successfully deal with the company recruitment process:

Practical activities and workshops to guide our students through the personal selection process.

- Curricula Handbook : Every year a Curricula Handbook is printed, containing the about-to-graduate MBA student’s CV. The handbooks are distributed to the main companies in Chile and Latin America.

-Business fairs : Allow our students to have several job interviews in one day with important companies all located at one specific site. Students can also attend participating company’s presentations and find valuable future work contacts at these fairs.

-Contacts with Headhunters: Headhunters periodically give lectures to our MBA students to provide them with information about the labor market and to generate contacts with potential recruiters.

-Contact with concrete job opportunities: our students permanently receive information from the Business Placement Center about concrete job opportunities. These job opportunity listings are a result of a 50 year relationship with the business world in Latin America.
