Which is better Lancaster or Manchester?
Hi, Sat May 16, 2009 07:00 PM I have received an admit from Manchester univ for "corporate communications and reputation management" Msc course....while, at the same time, i am awaiting results from lancaster for the course "advanced marketing management".... Would appreciate if someone tells me which univ i must opt for...also, since i would be an international student, "job" plays a crucial role especially when ill spending quite a sum for my education either at manchester or lancaster.. My background - i have 2 years of work experience in buying and merchandising - apparel retailing.... |

@Katyayani.Sun May 17, 2009 10:02 AM The Lancs course you are talking about is a hard-core marketing where as the Manchester course is a HR type and contains only two elective marketing modules. It is not possible to compare. Unless you wish to change ur current domain in purchase/retail marketing, it makes no sense to apply for the corporate communications and reputation management at MBS. Tell us one thing, did u originally apply for a marketing course at MBS and the MBS ppl tell you that they are not able to accommodate u in that course and given admit in this course? _Nes --- |

Now, i am rethinking about the course i have applied for. I was wondering, if its possible to request Manchester for a course change. I have gone through the school's website and have seen that there is a lot of demand for the international business course and for the global business analysis programme.. i was contemplating changing my course to either of the above mentioned programmes..Would be thankful for your thoughts and advice on the same.. Also, i particularly like the course at lancaster, but i am little concerned abt teh following - 1) The Job prospects post study 2) The place - smaller town when compared to Manchester 3) Career Guidance - I heard that there is no placement cell unlike manchester Do you suggest a course change in MBS? |

The Global Analysis course is good but its the International Business and Management which steals the show. I dont think the MBS will change your course of study once you have been made a firm offer. But then do ask them, miracle might happen!Mon May 18, 2009 08:34 AM The MBS course is of HR type and do finds its takers across all industry sectors. Consulting domain seems to love these grads but dismal less than 30% have been able to secure jobs inside UK and 21% unemployed (as per 2007 stats.). Most of the unemployed would definitely be the international students particularly those without work-ex. This proves that location though is very important but profile is much more important, a big city like Manchester wont help out in a big way. Overall its okay type course which will fetch u a white collar job, and since you have 2 yrs of work ex, you can be optimistic regarding job. Course structure gives me a felling that its worth the money. The course being accredited by CIM is a big bonus. Its a no-nonsense Marketing course without the big city glamor. Lancaster's business school has its own career service (www.lums.lancs.ac.uk/careers/) unlike Manchester's Studentnet (www.studentnet.manchester.ac.uk/) which caters to all the departments. Hi NesSat Jun 06, 2009 04:35 PM I havent requested for course change....i am sticking on to the same course.. And here in India, Manchester is more known and reputed than lancaster.. I do beleive that course plays a vital role in building up one's profile, but i guess, for the first time in my life,...ill be prioritising the school over course thanks for ur suggestions! |

Well my parents (and relatives) were terribly excited when I informed them that I got an admit from the Manchester business school! Not even my Aunt living in the Kent for her entire life didnt even say 'congrats' when I told her that Lancaster offered me a unconditional offer!! She said .. "okay" !!!! Manchester is very good city...in fact an exciting one and hugely popular with young ambitious people..I am sure you will love the place and do well at the University Though a very good B School (www.ft.com/cms/s/0/b94c81ac-8dbe-11dd-83d5-0000779…) , Lancaster's location is a big disadvantage actually and I think it is the sole reason why you declined their offer..thats understandable and I tend to agree with you. Coz if cranfield ditches me, it will be too late for me to run back to manchester... Kinda playing a hard game here..dont expect results from cranfield till july.. |

Manchester is a very good institution and is located in the heart of a big city, however please let me share with you some of my experience. If you are only concerned about the location, then go to Manchester, but if you are considering quality of education then I would definitely suggest you to to Lancatser. The reasons are: 1- Lancaster is higher ranked than Manchester 2- Lancaster's Management School is a 6* business school jointly with London Business School 3- Its MBA programme is ranked 22nd Worldwide 4- Classes are small unlike Manchester 5- Student/Staff Ration in Lancaster is way better 6- Student Satisfaction ranking is way better than Manchester 7- Most companies value Lancaster's graduates as they know that their experience and knowledge is of world class quality I have been there and done a masters degree and I had the best time of my life and was taught by a group of gurus. Lancaster is triple accredited and they are now working with a consortium of great schools such as INSEAD, LSE and so forth. Hmm...my finance from the bank is on its way...its too late for me to change my decision to lancaster....Sat Jun 27, 2009 06:07 PM Lancaster is a good school, the course is great but since i have already made a decision, i dont wish to regret now and look back .... Sun Jul 26, 2009 09:26 AM Hi, Although Lancaster is better ranked as a university in the UK rankings, Manchester is much better ranked as a university in world rankings plus Manchester's business school is slightly better ranked than Lancaster’s when taking an average of all recognised rankings (FT, EIU, QS, Business Week, Forbes). Manchester has a much better global reputation benefitting from the name of the city and being established long before Lancaster although Lancaster’s business school was formed not long after Manchester's so overall MBS has achieved more than LUMS so far. Lancaster has a pleasant countryside campus but almost in the middle of nowhere compared to Manchester's location in the middle of a big city although that's up to individual preference. Manchester is more expensive but as you will only be doing the MSc once, cost and time should really not be the deciding factors. As for job prospects, Manchester is much better recognised so I would definitely go for it. Hope that helps. |

ITMOC is a very good programme and it's being affiliated now with Accenture, SAP and Deloitte. Visit LUMS website and you can see that this course combines, management, IT and change in one degree, which is very imperative for today's consulting world. If you plan to be an IT consultant, then this is the right course for you.
