MS or MBA ?
Hi , Tue Mar 17, 2009 07:11 AM I am Rajveer Sethi from India. I m persuaing B.Tech in electronics and communication and presently i m doing my 8th semester as an intern in PATNI COMPUTER SYSTEM (It's IT company of India). Its a six month internship. I want to persue MS in marketing/management or international business from any of the top 5 uk university after completing my B.Tech. But i have some following doubts because either I can go for MBA from a not so good uni as i dont have work exp. or I can go for Master's from a good university :- 1.) Should I go for Job after completing B.Tech and then apply for MBA or should I directly apply for Master's in any of the above mention course and then do a job ? 2.) What exactly is the difference between MBA and Master's ? 3.) What are the Job prospective in UK for Master's degree holder ? 4.) Can this 6 month internship help me getting into some good uni like warwick,LBS for Master's ? I would really appreciate if anyone could resolve my doubts. Tue Mar 17, 2009 08:23 AM Hi , Hello Rajveer, I am from India and I will be joining Warwick this fall for MSc-Management course. I think I can answer some of your queries. Nevertheless, request inputs from other members also for getting a good insight in this matter. Answer 1: No one in this world can answer this question except you. This is decade long debate going on in every aspirant's heart. You need to weigh your pros and cons to answer this. Consider factors like finance, eligibility, patience, your ambition before coming to an answer to this infamous question! Answer 2: Many ppl think that MSc is a mini MBA. well its not. You can say that "MSc is a variant of MBA specifically designed for people having less corporate experience thereby focus is more on theoretical aspects since peer learning is less". Both MBA and MSc students study in the same Business school, learn under the same faculty, struggle with the same subjects. Dissimilarities are- MSc passouts got slightly less recognition than MBAs in job market since the avg. work ex of an MBA from Warwick/LBS is 8-9 yrs where MSc from the same schools is 2-3 yrs. In terms of money, MScs are lesser paid than the MBAs owing to the less work-ex. Answer 3: All European countries recognize MScs from B Schools. Large MNCs find MSc a good option to recruit than MBAs for a managerial position since they need to pay lees salary (cost cutting). I wont say the prospective is high, but its pretty decent. Actually it all depends upon your school's reputation, your profile, economic condition and a pinch of luck! Ans 4: No. Absolutely not. I am in the IT field for more than two years so let me inform you that an internship at at an Indian IT Co like Patni is very good but not extra ordinary, you need other things also. It wont alone get you a seat at a Business School. Let me tell you some statistics..last year more than 960 people applied to MBS for the MSc- International Management course...only 60 got acceptance. MSc in top grade B School is very difficult to get just like MBA. You need to have a very good profile for schools like LBS, LSE, Warwick, Said, Judge, Tanaka, Cass, Strathclyde etc. Of course, the tier 2 or 3 would welcome you. At the end of the day, its your choice! All the best. --Nes --- |

Thanks nblueblaze but before that congrat's for warwick.Tue Mar 17, 2009 08:48 AM It's a great university. It's ok with me if I get a job with less salary after completing my Msc but will it help me in long run ? And I had gone through the course of Msc in management of LBS where they have clearly mentioned that this course has been design for those who have no work exp. So please tell me how should i proceed in order to get admission in LBS or any other equilent uni.?? About my profile-I had scored 82% in 10th,76% in 12 and my B.Tech is going on 70% + 6 month internship in Patni + particpated in many co-curricluar activities .... Do u think it can really get me through if I try in warwick, LBS and manchester along with ILets and Gmat score? I know you can answer these question very well because you have gone through all this . Thanks again . |

A post grad in Business from a reputed Uni will open up numerous doors...all you need to do is to be alert and grab the opportunity! 2. Analyze a logical statement : "this course has been design for those who have no work exp"...tell me one thing...does this statement tells you that they will take only freshers?? No. Its Business course, any day they will prefer a guy with work ex. The statement means that 'even if you have no work ex you will be able to cope; the course has been designed in such a way' i.e. its highly academic...less focus on P2P learning. Lets take Warwick for example...The eligibility criteria MSc- Management tells that work ex should not exceed 18 months at the time of application...mine was 17...i was eligible! At any decent B School the avg work-ex of a MSc class would be around 1 year...max 3 yrs...composition: 40-50% with no work ex. 3. your profile is good...try to present some white/technical papers, do some foreign language courses etc. then write a solid SOP on your own and get good references...God willing, you will find a seat. Actually its very difficult to explain what is a good profile...cz no two persons are similar! 4. Warwick and Manchester prefers GMAT score for MSc also. Means that its not mandatory but it will solidify your application. Warwick prefers a score of 610+ in GMAT for MSc-Management. I am not sure for LBS but for LSE, GMAT is a must. You will be amazed to notice that all top level B Schools insisting on GMAT scores while the mediocre are not that particular about GMAT! Regarding ILETS, well I didnt take ILETS, I took TOEFL...You can take any one of them but the bar for either one of them is very very high...for eg. at Warwick the TOEFL iBT cutoff for MSc Management is 109 (out of 120) and for the MSc- Marketing & Strategy its 115 (out of 120). According to me Msc in UK because of global exposure but what are your opnion ? You must have done some study about it also |

A handful of Indian Universities/Business school award MBA degrees. Most of them including the mighty IIMs, IIFT and XLRI award PGPs i.e. Post Graduation Diplomas which is equivalent to MBA. Super-elite ISB also doesnt award MBA. Its interesting to note that PGP is NOT inferior to MBA in any regard...both having equal value. India along with few other Asian countries like China, UAE and Singapore got tremendous focus on quality education. A coveted seat at any top 20 Indian B School will give the same leverage in India as say Warwick in UK...The real challenge comes when you need to go to a new geographical location to work! Hence you see the business leaders like Sunil Bharthi Mittal (Airtel owner) going to Harvard B School for executive education for gaining more global exposure and learn more tactics to run a business. Post the global slowdown its no longer a challenge to find a job rather its really challenging how to remain employed!!! This is hard but is true anywhere in this planet - USA, UK, UAE, India, China, France, Japan...etc. There is absolutely no tips from me in this regard. I suggest talk with your parents on this, read Business World's B School special Magazines and refer the FT rankings on web and take a responsible step...
