Stern Interview Help
I got interview call from Stern NYUThu Feb 05, 2009 06:45 PM Will it be beneficial to attend the interview in person or over the phone i live in charlotte, NC, so they gave me option please suggest what do you think will be best TIA |

That obviously depends on whether you are a "face-to-face guy" or a "phone guy", ie whether you can make an impression on other people by the way you act as a person.Fri Feb 06, 2009 01:42 PM Of course, it's much easier to stand out of the crowd of applicants (positive or negative) when you meet them and talk to them in NYC. I would always prefer to attend the interview in person, but that's me (I am a very good looking and talkative person :-)). |

Is this your number one choice? Are you physically and financially able to travel to NY for the interview?Wed Feb 11, 2009 08:13 PM Then GO IN PERSON! It shows how important it is to you, and gives you a chance to make a real impression. Interviews are SUCH an important part of the application process. Do it if it's really important to you that you get in. If Stern is your third choice, and you're already traveling to other interviews, it might not be worth your time/money. But I definitely think going in person greatly improves your chances of getting, especially if you interview really well. Otherwise, you're just a voice on the phone. Since you'd be making the trip you should make the most of it and get a tour of the campus, and ask to meet other faculty while you're there. |

I think it's safe to say that they're gonna ask you to elaborate on your strengths and weaknesses, your past experience, and why this all makes you a good fit for business school. Your biggest accomplishments, as well as your failures and what you've learned from them. If there's anything in your resume that jumps out (career shifts, employment gaps, etc.), expect them to want to know more about that.Thu Feb 12, 2009 12:04 PM Other standards are: - What do you think an MBA can do for your career? (you're gonna need to show you've done some serious thinking and research about this) - Why do you want to go to X school more than other b-schools? - What makes you different from the hundreds/thousands of other applicants they're interviewing? My advice would be to write out some answers for yourself. If you'Re like me, this will get you thinking in an organized way and expose things you might not have thought about. |

Oh and I've heard sometimes interviewers want to know where else you've been accepted and how you will decide if you also get into their school. It's a bit out-of-bounds, perhaps, but you might want to think about how you would answer.

I actually just had an admissions interview today.... (so I am only a recent expert on this topic as I have been reading up on it like crazy!)Thu Feb 12, 2009 09:24 PM Alan is pretty much on the money with those questions. They asked me: Why I want an MBA. Why I want to go to their school. What gives me a "competitive advantage" over other candidates? What do I bring to the table? What are my expectations for a first job out of school? --- My interviewer actually didn't ask a ton of questions; he just kind of had me expand and elaborate on things. It lasted about an hour. But it was good because it felt more like a conversation than a one-sided interview. I was prepared for the "strengths/weaknesses" and your "proudest accomplishments" type questions but he didn't ask those.. He did throw me off slightly by starting by asking me what my questions are about the university... usually that's at the end! So; make sure you have an off-the-bat question ready! I saw this article online and thought it was pretty helpful: www.ivyleagueadmission.com/businterview.html My interview wasn't that stodgy.. but mine was also at a 2nd tier, midwestern school. So... might be higher expecatations at Stern, not sure what the culture is like there. |

As for your question about telling them about the Babson offer.. I'm not sure. I would definitely tell them if they ask you about what other schools you're considering. In that case I would still make it clear that Stern is your first choice, with some good reasons.Thu Feb 12, 2009 09:33 PM Tellling them about the other offer isn't a bad thing. Shows that they're going to have to compete for you. But I also wouldn't want to come off as boasty. So I might not tell them about the offer unless they ask. I think you'll be able to tell if it's appropraite. |

I applied for a full time MBA. I haven't heard back from any schools yet so I didn't have to worry about telling them about other offers. This was the first interview I've done so far. Sat Feb 14, 2009 06:11 PM Although, the interviewer did ask me why this university over other similar schools. And I said that I had applied to some of the other schools but that this particular one was my first choice because I thought their specific class format was a good fit for me, and would be the prime place for me because of its location and networking opportunities that are relevant to my career path. If I did have another offer I probably wouldn't have mentioned it unless he asked me point blank: Have you received any offers yet? But that is just me. Just be natural and say what feels right! I think one should always be honest and tell about the other schools applied to - the interviewer is certainly not naive, and knows exactly how it is. people always apply to more then one school - this is a fact, and i don't think that the schools have a problem with that. after all its only common sens.

I asked how much focus is put on quantitative skills vs. leadership/management. I asked what career paths most students take, how many end up being managers or entrepreneurs. Or whether most students just want to work in the finance industry, since there are a lot of financial companies around. Thu Feb 19, 2009 03:53 AM I am interested in entrepreneurship, so I asked why they had stopped offering an entrepreneurship focus at the school. I asked about study abroad opportunities; and how that fits into scheduling. I also asked about part-time work opportunities on or near campus, and about when you'd need to apply for a graduate assistantship. I don't know if you are supposed to ask this, but I also asked what my prospects were for admission, and whether it was likely I might receive a scholarship. Hope this helps. Good luck! Post note: Of course I had researched all these topics on the school's Web site before the interview, so I was asking him to expand on what I already knew. It's too early to tell.. I just had my interview last week. However, when I asked about my prospects, the interviewer said i should feel pretty confident because my acedemics were sufficient and I interviewed well. He also said I probably have a chance at getting some level of scholarship, but its up to their scholarship committee.Thu Feb 19, 2009 07:01 PM I should find out for sure in the next few weeks.. Yes, the school I am looking at is 37K per year. (74 K total) .. so it is less. They also offered to give me a half tuition merit scholarship.. so it would "only" be 37K total. But for me that is still expensive! Thu Apr 23, 2009 09:56 PM I am thinking of waiting until next year and holding out for a better offer... or at least to save some money to help pay for it. I also applied to a few other schools later in the game, so I am waiting to hear what they might offer as well. Sorry for such a late response! [Edited by sally on 24 Apr 2009] |
