Hi Nes,

I think the short answer is "Yes", as long as its from a respected school. You're also absolutely correct in your summation of why an MSc might be preferable to an MBA in some cases. And within that distinction, therefore, lies the crux of the matter. Compared with an MBA, an MSc is only a starting point (albeit a good one from which to advance your career and, should you choose to later on, do an MBA), and a strong foundation for career advancement. What it won't do is immediately catapault you into the upper eschelons of management. For that to happen, you'll have to wait a few years.

If you are to rank the following Universities - Warwick, Manchester, Lancaster, Cranfield, Strathclyde, Bradford for the MSc courses in Management (read general management) how would you do it?

Hi..
I am facing a dilemma...
I am also very interested to do Msc Management..
I have already got admits from Lancaster and Cass Business School.....
I am yet to hear from Imperial college, Strathclyde and edinburgh..

Which according to you is the best choice??

Cass is the best if you have a liking for the finance based subjects.
Lancaster is good for general management.
If you ask me I would rate strathclyde higher than Lancaster though FT rates strathclyde below in the rankings.
and Edinburgh is at par with Lancaster but located in a big city unlike the later.
Regarding Imperial, seriously donthave any idea...heard that got good reputation in pure science but as far as the business education is concerned I dont have much idea.

Well, is Lancaster good? i heard its in countryside...I am an international student and 'job' is a big criteria. So, i thought that i will drop it..
I was planning to take up CASS or Imperial..
Well, regarding the Business School of Imperial College, its got very good results( second best) in the latest RAE ...how is the Job Scenario in Scotland??

Let me deal one by one:
1. Lancaster is fantastic B school, without any doubt. But not upto the mark of brushing its shoulders with Manchester/Cranfield/Cass. One may ask then why did the FT guys rated Lancaster so highly, well the audit year for lancaster is 2008 where as Manchester is 2004, hence Lancaster have beaten Manchester, Carnfield, Warwick, Strathclyde, Leeds, Nottingham...etc! But No doubt its a very good b school and considering the fact that the Msc costs 11000GBP, its cheapest in its class. If you ask me I would rate Lancaster at par with Edinburgh.

2. Yep Lancaster is in a countryside located University. No doubt the Job percentage of Lancaster is low because of that fact. 78% for 2008 MBAs...lets not talk of MSc... Job is important but go through the course content of Lancaster Msc before rejecting it...it has solid course content...much better than even Warwick.

3. Cass is absolutely top grade B school...very good in finance...marketing and other specializations are not well known. Being located in London, the cost factor is very high. Tanaka is a good b school, but getting 3.99 on a scale of 10 for the HM 2004 audit of Global B schools doest make it 'best'. Also its very expensive. But then its ur choice. These are my personal views..

4. RAE terminology is very complex. For example, its very difficult to understand the difference between 5C and 4A. Loughborough's B school has been given as 5 star rating by the RAE people (See the post graduate prospectus) but it is not listed in the FT rankings also its not triple accreditated. So whats the validity of RAE tables?

5. Donno about job scenario in Scotland but the UK-BA website tells that the IGS scheme is no more. it has been replaced by the point based system.
