NUS or HKUST for work in Singapore?

Hi all.
I`ve been accepted into NUS and awaiting a decision from HKUST. My target country to work in post-mba is singapore and I`m not targetting finance. Consulting and General management are the areas i`m after. The faculty and courses i`ve already studied, so its the placements and opportunities I`m more interested in. So the questions :-

1) Which university will provide me with better opportunities for post-mba employment in singapore?
2) Which university will provide me with better negotiating position in terms fo salary in singapore?
3) Which university will provide better internship opportunities? (Country not as important)

effectively, I`m asking about the brand value and salary value of both of these universities in singapore.

I had a feeling it would be. But i am still unsure, because the faculty and Alumni at HKUST seem to be superior to NUS`s. Likewise the CSO at HKUST appear far superior and the placements shown on the website seem to be at far more prestigous companies (probably because of the new head of CSO)

NUS seems to have made strides with their new dean (from LBS) and probably will get better when their new facilities open in a couple of years, however that will be after i`ve finished. It also competes with INSEAD and NTU for a lot of the placements.

HKUST is on a roll, top 20 in Economist and FT, do you see NUS anywhere there? that should be your answer.

Sorry, but HKUST wasn't in the FT charts last year for similar reasons NUS aren't in this year. Not enough valid responses for Alumni.

Besides, rankings are not what i am basing my choices on, because rankings are always different depending on the criteria you use to measure.

Besides, rankings are not what i am basing my choices on, because rankings are always different depending on the criteria you use to measure.


NUS in FT, where at 85? common. Hkust is the only Asian school ever to be able to crack top 20 in FT and EIU solely on merit.

still hkust, if you get an offer from IB most of the time you can move around as far as I know. if you wanted to go from HK to NYC or London that would probably be difficult, but from HK to Singapore, why not? talk to some i-bank hr people how that works.

I would say, if you want to work in Singapore, go to NUS. I myself was admitted to both NUS and HKUST, and I have written on this forum about the reasons I have chosen HKUST. I myself am 100% sure that NUS MBA is sucks. An exchange student from HKUST who went to NUS for exchange programme also says that NUS is bad (this is second hand information, but still). But if you want to work in Singapore, better go for MBA in Singapore. Here at HKUST there are almost no chances to efficiently hunt jobs in areas other than HK and China. You will be in a better position to hunt a Singapore job in Singapore. But you will learn much less in NUS than in HKUST, and globally your NUS MBA will be recognized much less than HKUST MBA. But if you want to work in Singapore, and the choice is NUS and HKUST, go to NUS.

P.S. Just take into account one thing: plans may change. If you go to NUS, and suddenly you change your mind about working in Singapore, you loose your bets. I wanted to work in Asia when I applied for MBA. Now I have family reasons to move back to Europe. These reasons came absolutely unexpected. And now I am twice more happy that I have chosen HKUST, not NUS...

Well very clearly,
if Singapore is ur destination the answer is unequivocally NUS or NTU.
I personally think NTU is better as they have a higher percentage of international students... besides their tie-ups with ESSEC, St. Gallen and an Japanese B-school provide u three options for double degree

Another major reason for opting for NUS/NTU is that u have a high recognition and brand value within singapore.
This benefits in two ways:
1. Companies are willing to take u in.
2. The govt is known to be more favorable to NTU/NUS grads in offerring permanent residency (PRs). I have heard a few people who grad from NUS/NTU and started working in Singapore were invited to apply for PR by the govt.

HKUST.. i haven't been there.. wouldn't go there... basically if u approach any top Consulting firm they simply say HK: u need to be fluent in mandarin, while singapore : we're fine with english...

although HK is known to be more international face of China, however, Mandarin's significance in business should not be forgotten.. if u r keen to work in china and learn mandaring go to HKUST..
but for singapore forget it.

To put the discussion into perspective...
i think the context of the question is :
which amongst NUS or HKUST is better for a career in singapore.

In this context, NTU/NUS enjoy the home advantage.

We are not discussing which is the best Asian B-school.

Well, one CAN actually find a job outside of HK and PRC from HKUST MBA. It is not impossible, especially outside Asia. Also not everybody wants to work in consulting, especially in the top consulting firm. So, in my opinion, Stuart is only partially right. But still, for getting a job in Singapore, NUS is your first choice, NTU is your second choice, and SMU is your third choice. HKUST should not be a target school for getting a job in Singapore. The issue which school, NUS or HKUST, is better is completely irrelevant here.

I am as my nick suggests, and I hope I will not be flamed by deviating from the topic at hand, but would like to understand if i should re-take my Gmat of 590 (1st sitting) in order to qualify for NUS/NTU MBA? 2nd Lower Honours & 3 years experience is what I have...
