MBA for Entertainment Industry in California

Hi there,

I am interested in doing my MBA in California to work in the future in some field of the entertainment industry. I love the underground hip-hop and rock n' roll scene, graffiti and comic book art, and independent and comedy films, so I hope to find a good job that I love with doing work related to one of these subfields of the entertainment industry. Does anyone know what the best Universities in California would be for me to apply to? I know that UCLA is supposed to be great and USC too, even though it is rather pricy. Also, if I want to work in one of these fields is it best for me to specialize in marketing? I am a very visual person who is talented in art. Also, I have given some thought of doing an international type major because I am half American and half German. I have given it some thought about concentrating on Macro, or international business, but my true passion is the arts like I said. I would appreciate any advice on which schools would be my best options, or about what kind of job opportunities there are in this type of entertainment industy. Thank you.

Hey Sebastian, you have some quite special fields of interests, and sounding like a lot of fun also!

You are a rather untypical MBA candidate in that. It depends a bit on which direction you want to go in terms of structure, I mean here if you are interested by a major dealing with the kind of music you like, or if you want to start your own business and acquire the knowledge you will need for this.

In the latter case there are several criteria which don`t count for you such as connection of the MBA with international recruiters, repuation of the MBA (you won`t need to impress any employer with the name of your MBA) and probably also business contacts and alumni - since the partnerships you will need are more in local culture or subculture. That means you can chose a cheaper MBA and more go after the school and place you like.

But if you want to work for Sony music or similar, your choice will be very different...
