Hi All

I am planning for MBA in australia.I have Monash and RMIT universities in my mind.

Anyone have any info about the placements and reputation of these two universities?
Appreciate your comments.
Also i heard that placements only for local students?IS it true?I have PR and im concerned about placements,ROI after degree. :(-

Please shed some light.

Monash has a significantly better reputation than RMIT; it is one of Australia's 'Group of Eight' elite universities and has the top ranked MBA program in Australia. You should also consider the Melbourne Business School which is part of the University of Melbourne; another excellent university.

Hello Marteli, that's very interesting! Can you name other universities of that "group of eight" you mention, which offer an MBA?
Besides, I would prefer Sydney as a city, but I'm a bit lost, which could be a good MBA there?

If you are really serious about getting the best MBA education in Australia, go to either of these two programs :
- Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM)
- Melbourne Business School (MBS)

These first tier top schools have high quality program and faculty, ranked as some of the best by many ranking institutions (like the Financial Times). Highly recognised by employers, other International MBA schools and many other institutions. Not only the best in Oz, but also recognised the premium schools in Asia Pacific.

They have great international exchange programs. I just checked Monash website and they don't even have it. If you are a graduate of AGSM or MBS, you're automatically eligible to be considered for HSMP(highly skilled migration program) in the UK. These two are the only Australian MBA schools recognised.

If you can't go to these two for some reasons, the only other schools (second band) worth to look are:
- MGSM
- Monash
- Uni of Queensland

The AGSM is a joint venture between UNSW and the University of Sydney; both are members of the group of eight.

The 2006 Times Educational Survey ranks ANU (which offers their MBA through the NGSM), which is in Canberra, as the top ranked university in Australia at #16. The following rankings relate to the global reputation (in brackets) of the Uni (not the MBA course itself).

1.ANU (#16) – MBA via the National Graduate School of Management
2.Melbourne (#22) – MBA via the Melbourne Business School
3.Sydney (#35) – MBA via the Australian Graduate School of Management
4.Monash (#38)
5.UNSW (#41) – MBA via the Australian Graduate School of Management

It’s worth noting that Monash (and I think ANU) doesn’t insist upon the GMAT yet. The remainder will require at least 550. The other thing to note is that they don’t all cost the same!

I think we need to get some facts current. AGSM was no longer a joint venture between UNSW and University of Sydney as of last year. At establishment AGSM was wholly owned by UNSW, then became a joint venture with USyd for several years (I think about 7-8 years), then became wholly owned again by UNSW.

With regards to ranking, many institutions runs MBA rankings. Each uses different methods and produces different listings. Most MBA wannabes, students, and graduates from top schools will say that they refer to Business Week's (tend to be US schools biased) and/or Financial Times/FT (less US biased, regarded as fairer and more reliable ranking by most). Latest 2007 FT list ranked AGSM at 49 (last year 75) and MBS at 79 (last year 69), the only 2 OZ schools in the global top 100 list.

Yes, AGSM and MBS are also the most expensive and require GMAT. If I remember correctly, QUT started requiring GMAT recently. By some employers GMAT requirement is seen as signal of more stringent screening of quality graduates. Some employers, like top consulting companies (BCG, McKinsey) and others even ask for applicant's GMAT score in online job application form

I only found AGSM and MBS in the relevant rankings, thank you for naming the second level MBA programs. Those are not easy to identify if you don't know a country.

You guys should be looking at the best Finance MBA in Asia,
and that is HONG KONG UST. If you want to spend some time in Australia, you can exchange there for a semester.

HKUST has a great Finance MBA, I don't contradict - but Mithil as an engineer is not looking for an MBA in finance anyways, I presume.

Besides, I don't agree that doing an exchange program for a semester brings the same advantages as moving to Australia to do an MBA. During the program you easily build up connections with local business, companies based in the area. So I'd say this choice depends on your career plan.

Thanx for all that...but i still did not get my answer. I actually wanted to know that doing ONE YEAR MBA from RMIT has good market value or not...i mean to say that whether it is equivalent to two year MBA from other b-school.

RogerFed: Yes, if you're in Melbourne, MBS (Melbourne Business School) will be the best choice for MBA.

Mithil: Studying at RMIT will give you some value (studying at any school in that matter), but IMHO your post graduate value will be much better if you do your MBA at a better quality school. If you're serious about taking MBA and post MBA career, in Melbourne that would be to study at MBS.
