Anyone else in Germany for an MBA?
Sat Dec 16, 2006 03:19 PM
Hi everybody,
I'll start my MBA in Munich now in January, and I just moved there.
Since it's my first time in Germany, I would be keen to get in contact with other foreign students currently doing or, like me, starting their MBA in Germany to exchange infos.

I plan to do an MBA in Germany, but I'm just in the process of applying, so no experience yet.
But I know Germany quite well, I've been there several times, so I can give you quite a few informations.
Where do you come from?

I am from Malaysia and worked in SIngapur for the past few years. I've been to the States ans Australia, but Germany is quite different still. Somehow "exotic" for me..
Where do you come from? Do you have the same feeling about Germany?

Hi Sunny,
I'm from Bulgaria, so what you find exotic, probabely is not so much for me... But still, when you feel lost or wonder about something, there are many things I can explain to you!
So what do you think of that Christmas hype?

Hi, the christmas hype... yes, this was a very good question! It's so pittoresque - I regularely think I am in Disney world, but no it's real, it's Munich!
Thank you very much for your offer, Irena. The most difficult for me is the rules of communication between people. I can't figure out why people seem unfriendly sometimes. Or when I meet somebody I don't know, if I should call the person to meet again or not.
Difficult, maybe I can learn this only through experience?

Hello Sunny,
It's true that what you experience regarding these rules of human interaction, seeming to different in your cultural setting than in Europe, that are problems I don't share with you. In Balcan countries we are close to Germans in that. I'd say that the unfriendliness f.ex. is much worse where I come from!
Rules of politeness are just very different here from Asia. YOu'll find out through experience, but don't hesistate to post in the board, I think your exyperience is interesting for many others!

Hello Sunny,
coming from Asia, I was a bit surprised about the direct, honest way of communicating in Germany... But you'll see, once you are used to it, this direct way is a lot less complicated. Our rules of politeness in Asia (which are diverse of course) can make life kind of difficult. I appreciate the clear message in German talks.

Hello,
I appreciate your comments... So it is quite normal that I feel a bit awkward sometimes! Good to know that I'm not an exception. I'll keep you posted if something weird happens to me ;)

I understand that you were more discussing cultural differences, but maybe you can help me with some info how to find those MBAs in Germany which are worth doing? There are so many, I'm a bit lost...
Thanks! Pablo

Hello, no, I have no preference, sctually it's the first time I consider studying in Germany, and I don't have a precise idea about the differente German regions. Which areas are good? It would be wonderful if you could share!

It's for the language that you look for an MBA in Germany if I understand right? You should include Austria and German speaking Switzerland to your options, there are not so many B schools, easy to identify the good ones.

Yes, you are right, since I speak Spanish and some French, I prefer to study in a German speaking country for the additional language skills. As you seem to know quite well, which MBAs would you advise me to check out? Thanks.

Hi there, the problem im Germany is that you have loads of programs, you can here on this site how incredibly long the list of Germany MBAs is. Hardly any of them is ranked internationally, means they can all be medium good or bad... A lot of work to go through them all!
So you don't care if it's Berlin, Frankfurt or Munich? Or Vienna?

Hello, a report from my personal Munich experience: I can't tell so much because it has only been a month. It's a beautiful city, strong economy, goos job opportunities. You can get get good contacts when studying here.
Cologne is a cozy city, people seem to be very nice! And in Cologne they have one of the few internationally ranked MBAs at "University of Cologne".

In Frankfurt it's difficult, there is just the EMBA of the University, but I guess you are looking for a regular MBA? Weird, this city of banks and business does not offer anything apparently.
As for Berlin: ESCP-EAP is good, and I heard good things about the ESMT, but it's a brand new program, so I don't really know how to judge.

Hi, I don't know abou Hamburg. But here are some more ranked programs, from the BW ranking:
- HHL Leipzig
- Mannheim Business School
- WHU Koblenz
Leipzig should be quite nice, the two other cities are probabely not so exciting. But in the end you go there to study, not to be in an exciting place.. ;)

I guess Tias Nimbas is the best school of all those mentioned above? But if I understand right, the programs are always only partly taught in Germany, for some weeks, or maybe a few months in a row, but Tias Nimbas doesn't offer any program taking place in Germany only. I'm just wondering concerning language skills, I think a longer stay in Germany is helpful.

No, I think you can do an MBA in Bonn, maybe some modules of some weeks are taught in another location, but most of the time you would be in Bonn. But I'm not 100% sure, you should check that info.

Yes, Tias Nimbas of all German MBAs is first in the international rankings. But I would say ESCP-EAP in berlin is a very good program, you should apply there too.
