Hey Uxl,
Thank you for all your effort and this interesting info! Especially that you added the link with the English version of the text, because my German is not good enough right now to understand the whole meaning (I hope after having finished my MBA this situation will be substantially different!!).

Hello Vince!
I'm preparing my application for the part time MBA at Nimbas at the moment. Whatever you can tell me about that part time MBA and TiasNimbas would be of great interest for me!
What did change since Tias and Nimbas have joined their efforts?
Thanks, Irena

Tilburg University is very good in research. While US MBAs have a more research-oriented faculty, most European programs have a more practioner-based faculty. Both types of programs can be of high quality, but I think you need to be aware of these differences. Personally I think that faculty with a good research orientation provide more interesting insights, but of course you can't always generalize.

For some info on this, you can check the following business research ranking made at the UTexas Dallas:

citm.utdallas.edu/utdrankings/RankingWorldwide_sta…

There are only five European schools among the top 100 schools in business-related research: INSEAD, LBS, Tilburg, Erasmus, and Oxford.

Hello Jaitego, what are the advantages of a research-oriented MBA? Isn't first goal of an MBA to prepare you for practice, at the difference of most other, more scientific university degrees?

I think I didn't express myself clearly. All MBAs are of course oriented towards practice. The difference is in the faculty. In some MBA programs, faculty members, besides teaching, do high-level research; whereas in other MBA programs they do less or no research. For example, in the best US MBAs (Kellogg, Wharton, Harvard, Stanford, Chicago) faculty members are promoted only if they are able to publish in top academic journals. That doesn't mean that their MBA teaching is oriented towards research. MBA teaching always aims at giving you practical knowledge and those programs are actually among the best in the world.

It happens that in Europe, unlike the US, the main b-schools were born outside of the universities and relied quite heavily on practitioners --people who worked for a company and would go to the school just to teach some sessions. That's why if you look at research rankings European schools lag well behing US schools. That is changing a little bit but there's still a big difference.

Teaching styles and approaches tend to be different for those reasons. Practitioners can give you lots of specific examples of their own area/field/company, but what one sees in his own company can't always be generalized to other companies or industries. The danger is that lectures end up being a series of stories which are fun but not so useful 5-10 years afterwards. Academic professors can give you more general evidence and advice, and will generally be more useful in terms of pushing you to really think about why things happen in that particular way, how else things could be organized, etc. In other words, those people tend to be more creative. The danger here is that the lectures may have less relevant / realistic examples, particularly if the faculty member is junior.

Hi Jaitego,
Thank you for this long answer, I really appreciate (+ I'm sorry to be so ignorant to ask these kind of questions..).
So this research orientation it is a considerable sign of quality for Tilburg, compared to other European schools, adding to the practice orientated teaching a more scientific, analysis based approach of business.
Thanx again.

Nimbas? Nyenrode ?

Hello Irena and everyone, my name is Fan. by chance i find this board. i plan to pursue a degree on FinanceManagement (parttime) and ive been looking for business schools in NoordBrandt. There is this Nimbas and another one with capitial-N too, both in Utrecht.

Clearly they are 2 different schools but are they somewhat related? or is Nimbas the same as "business school of Tilburg". it's indeed "international" enough. and too much. i am bit doubting its "quality". can someone pls give some comment on this?

Thank you.

I know its really difficult when two names begin with the same letter, but with some research and a little cunning it is possible to distinguish between them.

Maybe this would be a good place to start:

Hi there,
What are the b-schools around Eindhoven, is not any school in NL "close" to it since NL is so small? ;-)

About the Dutch b-schools, I had already looked into that question last year, so here a little input from there:
TiasNimbas Business School is a sort of merging of b-schools, therefore it has several campusses, some in GER some in NL: Utrecht Campus, Tilburg Campus (also to answer your question above, TIlburg is related in fact, its part of TiasNimbas), Bonn Campus.

But don`t worry, Neyenrode and TiasNimbas both offer a part time MBAs, where did you get the info that famous schools don`t? Only RSM does not, if you meant that.

Regarding their reputation, Nyenrode and TIasNimbas both appear in the relevant international rankings, both are a good choice, RSM is the best, the order is always: RSM, TIasNimbas, Nyenrode.

If you have other questions, just ask, I am pleased to share the info!

i think i know enough.
(the part of "they donot offer parttimes" i meant regular Masters. Not MBA... i kind of feel here is not quite my place of asking info on masters. ^ ^ )
i will definitely go for the MSc in January 2009 in Tias. Thanks Irena and everyone!

Oops, I am sorry if I overread this about Master, and didn't refer to your special needs - but in fact this is more a forum for MBA questions, maybe we are not so well informed about Master studies.
bye, Irena
