MA/Msc vs MBA

this might sound pretty naive, but could i get comments on say acquiring an MA/Msc in management instead of MBA oweing to the high cost of an MBA? I mean what would be the major drawback for not doing an MBA?

An MA or MSc in business will not be as marketable in the business world as an MBA degree. The MBA is usually much more competetitive. It is more difficult to get into the top schools to do an MBA and the curriculum will be more rigorous in most cases. Many do an MBA after having completed an MSc. I think the "MBA" will open much more doors than any other graduate degree.

For comparision, how would an MA/Msc from a nice business school e.g Bradford compare with an MBA from say Luton,Reading Middlesex etc? Thx!

How about an MSC/MA in the management field from Edinburgh.....than an MBA from Reading, middlesex, essex, cardiff etc.

oooo....u got me wrong....wat I meant was....Instead of doing MBA from Reading, Cardiff, Essex, Lincoln, Middlesex etc etc....is it not beetr to do an MSC in the magement field from University of Edinburgh or Cass Business School(City University).

To refresh that thread:
I am from Germany, graduated engineer, aged 25 (work experience 6 months now). I have an offer for a MSc in Management in UK.
It was my second choice. Primary I want to study the MBA. Therefor I need more work experience at all.
So, what is the best choice I can do? I have read that a MBA is more respectable than a MSc right? Its just so confusing.

Any advice?

Hi Martin,

Typically the MSc emphases management in all its forms, while the MBA is more concerned with business strategy. The former is an academic degree, and therefore more theoretical, the latter is more professionally oriented. An MBA includes certain specialisations, while an MSc is more general. Neither one prevents entry into either academia or the professional world, however, but am MBA tends to be better recognised in the business world.

Thanks. Well, to study the MBA I have to work 2-3 years. In my opinion I will never want to study after I get started working. Excepting I have my own business. Well, I have 6 months now until the Programme is starting. Enoiugh time to think about it.

But I have still one question. Is here anybody who hast studied a MSc in Management?

This is not true. Some facts:
-M.Sc. is more rigorous than MBA
-Student in M.Sc/Phd can be a teaching assistant (TA) in MBA classes. (Never seen student in MBA is a TA in M.Sc/Phd class.)
-We have excess supply of MBA, but shortage of M.Sc. This information can be found in AACSB.
-more, plz do ur own research

MBA is better than only MSc Management!

Other specialized MSc Qualifications (e.g. Information Systems/EBusiness) could be more rigorous and intensive than MBA.

It also depends on the reputation of the University!

For Example, Master's degree from LSE could be in more demand than most of the MBAs!

People often do an MSc because it does not require any prior work experience like an MBA.

Another reason for doing an MSc is because it is the first step towards doing a PHD and people who do a PHD would often like to undertake a career in research or teaching.

However, when it comes to job prospects, an MBA from a reputable university would hold more weightage than an MSc from a reputable university. As someone mentioned above an MBA curriculum is much more practical than an MSc.

But has anyone considered doing an MIB (Masters in International Business) which is a compressed version of an MBA i.e. its equally practical and dosen't require prior work experience ?

I am totally agreed with above conversation and statements

But on other option MSc is not bad if you have less work ex.

But seriously MSC much more tuff and expensive almost equally like MBA and admission process is VERY VERY HARD

IF you are going for MSc from Reading Said ,Jaudge,Edinburgh,LSE,LBS, Manchester,Ashridge
and it really have a worth

am currently studying Msc in Management in Stirling Univ. and honestly we and the MBA students share about 80% of our modules...so i dont really beleive that the 2 extra modules they take will make them more practical or deeper into bussiness world than us...simply universities created such option btw MBA and MSC JUST FOR MONEY $$$ LOOL....so just they can attract more students from all financial levels :S poor and rich ! and one last thing ! Whether u have an Msc in management or an MBA...LUCK is everything...so dont panic about these two...just go ahead and choose the one that u can afford and start as early as possible...cheeeeeers

Hiii, Can any1 help me out?? I am a 24 yr old professional with arnd 18 months workexp. I have done BE as my undergrads.
I have d followin offers:
1. MSc Management, Cass
2. MBus. Global Business Analysis, Manchester
3. MBM, Strathclyde
m also expectin an offer frm Warwick fr MSc Management

Q. Which one out f these is d best option fr me?
Q. Does MSc Management hold a good value, is it worth investing time & money? because a frnd frm Uk is tellin me tht MSc management wouldnt help me land up a job, I need to go fr specialst programs..
Q. I hav also heard tht in UK thers a lot f tax(arnd 40%), coupled with high living costs, so one is nt able to save up much workin ther.. is this true?
Kindly clear the air over these issues...
