Top 5 MBA Blogs of the Week - May 11, 2008
By Maren[FIND MBA] in FIND MBA Blog on May 11, 2008
These week in the MBA blogs, it's party time at Wharton, Twitter goes country, a Chicago GSB student mulls over the pros and cons of pursuing an MBA, and we find out which Democratic presidential candidate Yoda would choose. Enjoy!01. If you read La Laudiaria's blog on life at Wharton, you could easily get the impression its all party, party, party. Nice to see her latest piece continues that grand tradition.
02. What does Hank Williams, legendary country singer and pioneer of the honky tonk style, have to do with twitter? According to this Leveraging Ideas post on "Interesting Memes Plucked from the Blogosphere," a lot.
03. When MBA is a four-letter word. Here's MBA Mom, from the Chicago Graduate School of Business, on the pros and cons of doing an MBA.
04. Regardless of one's political persuasion, it's hard not to enjoy this novel interpretation of the Democratic race for the White House which is currently holding the US, the world, and probably even the tiny forest moon of Endor in its thrall.
05. But this is even better...

That's right, it's time for our look at the crazy world of MBA blogs. This week it's cats, cakes, mayors, newts, bacon, bananas, a Lama, Rings of Power, boy wizards, and a load of balls.
01. On May 1, the good burghers of ye Olde London Towne voted to see who would be their next mayor. Would it be the incumbent, champagne-socialist and reowned lizard-lover "Red" Ken Livingston, or would it be blond bombshell Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, author of Seventy-Two Virgins? Well, the results are in.
02. Ever wondered what 50,000 corporate-sponsored cupcakes arranged together would look like? Well, thanks to Tedward, an MBA student at the University of Maryland R. H. Smith School of Business, you don't have to wonder any more.
03. Unconventional Applicant, from the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management, continues his fascinating discussion of his experiences living in China.
04. Anyone for Quidditch? Mike Murphy reflects on his first year as an MBA student at Hogwarts - sorry, Virginia's Darden.
05. So it looks like this year's UEFA Champions League final is going to be a contest between the two richest clubs in the world, Chelsea and Manchester United. Of course, only one British club has won the title 5 times, and that's this lot.

Top 5 MBA Blogs of the Week - April 28, 2008
By Maren[FIND MBA] in FIND MBA Blog on Apr 28, 2008
This week's Top 5 is a particularly eclectic one. Too eclectic to even begin to group under some kind of theme. In other words, it's all about diversity, multiplicity, random tales from the postmodern Global Village in which we all live.01. Mandy at Virginia's Darden discusses the ethics of Chinese table tennis.
02. At St. Gallen, Stuart Little witnessed an event that appears to have gotten many students and their professors very excited, even if it would surely make Jack White of the White Stripes want to cry. But hey, it's not like there's such a thing as a counterculture anymore anyway, so what does it matter?
03. Here's Square Method, an MBA student at Darden, with an innovative take on the connections between B-schools and the US Founding Fathers.
04. Self-styled entrepreneur (maybe even flaneur), Gabriel, describes what happened when his two favorite things collided, a battle destined to go down in history as "Doggie vs. MacBook."
05. And finally, Ben Bernanke's blues.

Hello and welcome back, MBAers and prospective MBAers of the world! What's that? What have we got for you this week? Why, only the very best, of course. All you have to do is read, click, and see your enemies flee before you!
01. Here's Unconventional Applicant, from the University of Minnesota Carlson, with his very special, potentially rather controversial account of his two years living in China. Part One & Part Two.
02. A little while ago we featured Texas A&M University MBA student Howdy's first video podcast. This week he turns his attention to Pope Benedict XVI's visit to America and ask "What's the Pope got to do with my MBA?"
03. Click here to see MBA Gladiator's account of Arnold Schwarzenegger's visit to Yale University last week to give a lecture on climate change.
04. Here's the very latest news from the world of finance.
05. And finally, learn English the fun way....

"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows." So how are you gonna roll? Are you going to let life tell you what to do, or are you going move forward? Are you, in short, going to play close attention to this week's survey of the best (and some of the rest) of the MBA blogosphere?
01. "Hoboken - you're fired!" With the end of his time at Yale School of Management in sight, the MBA Gladiator comes over all Donald Trump. Pay attention, too, to the quote from Rocky. Further proof, if proof were needed, of the genius of Sylvester Stallone. Roll on Rambo 2008!
02. Benny, an MBA student at Tuck School of Business isn't as observant as he thought he was. Nor were we, but can you do any better?
03. MaybeMBA at Chicago GSB has some advice for the ladies: if in doubt, DON'T MARRY AN MBA MAN! Especially when you can hire someone to fulfill all your non-MBA needs instead.
04. As anyone who's watched Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Twin Peaks, and countless other series from the very beginning can testify, pilot episodes are invariably strange beasts, often bearing only a distant relationship to the real thing. Howdy, at Texas A&M University, has put together an interesting pilot for what may turn out to be a regular thing. You can check out the first episode here.
05. And finally, more evidence that the end of the world will shortly be upon on us.

Welcome to this week's super Sunday roundup! Oh, sorry, it's been delayed. Your bags have been sent to Hungary, not Hawaii. And it looks like you'll be spending the next week in the departure lounge. Plenty of time to enjoy the following!01. Some people say that time = money. I bet those people never take time out to try a decent bit of cake whenever the need arises.
02. Sprechen Sie "B.S."? The London Business School alumni Divine Miss N does, even if it does leave a rather nasty aftertaste.
03. The 1980's saw an enormous number of campaigns urging us to save this and that. First, there was Save the Whales. Then came Save the Earth. In 1986 there was even something called Save Ferris. Now it's free coffee-shop Wi-Fi access that needs our help - at least that's what Perpetual Motion at Wharton believes.
04. As Mandy Lozano, aka 'It's not just about having good hair' will tell you, contrary to the rumors put about by a certain Mr. Tennessee Williams, it is actually very rare to find a cat on a hot tin roof. If, however, you go down to the Darden School of Business, you may find much stranger things.
05. Once upon a time the British ruled one third of the globe, and British engineering was renowned the world over. Not anymore. In fact, maybe we should consider Heathrow Airport's brand new, multi-billion dollar Terminal 5 the final nail in the coffin.

Top 5 MBA Blogs of the Week - March 30, 2008
By Maren[FIND MBA] in FIND MBA Blog on Mar 30, 2008
Hooray! Spring is sprung! Maybe. To celebrate and to help blow away a few of those winter cobwebs, here's a few more snippets from the most entertaining AND informative MBA blogs this week.
01. Brand management is important. Especially so if you're the manufacturer of one of the world's most famous (can we say 'successful'?) high-power assault rifles and you want to make your product appear a little friendlier. But as this blog from the Virginia's Darden School of Business reminds us, the ethics of re-branding can be tricky.
02. Can't see the woods for the trees? Here's some team-building, Berlin-style. Note: If all else fails, hit the pub.
03. I know, I know - it's another ESMT blog post. But how could one possibly resist when the issue under discussion is Robert Sutton's management classic The No Asshole Rule. Look for it at your local library.
04. We've all heard the story before: boy meets girl (or vice versa), falls in love, goes off to university, struggles to maintain long-distance relationship with aforementioned girl, then succumbs to the inevitable and breaks up with her. But does it have to be like that? Colleen at Nashville's Vanderbilt Owen thinks not - and offers some hope for all you Sig-O's out there.
05. Heard the one about the head of the US Federal Reserve going around using taxpayers' money to buy Maseratis while his colleagues go around the world making fools of themselves? No? Well, now you can.

By Maren[FIND MBA] in FIND MBA Blog on Mar 23, 2008
There are two kinds of people in life - winners and sinners. Which are you? The following cosmopolitan roundup of the best from the MBA blogosphere is intended to help you decide.01. Warning: repeated blogging can seriously destabilize your mental equilibrium, albeit in highly entertaining ways! If you need any proof, have a look at Skrikanth from NYU Stern Business School get creative. Prepare to be amazed.
02. Le Blog Hog drops his defenses and muses on how an MBA from INSEAD can contribute to entirely new realities.
03. At IESE Barcelona, Yang Wei Yin gets multi-culti - by swapping Megadeth for Miles Davis and partying with ninjas.
04. When Rocky Balboa (aka Rocky VI) came out, a lot of people missed the incredibly its subtle critique of modern-day capitalism and identity politics. Now, however, Shahid Hussain at the Kellogg School of Business has come up with a new interpretation of Beverly Hills Cop, which bridges the chasm between diffusion theory and Eddie Murphy's greatest contribution to cinema. This may just a stroke of genius.
05. So Bear Stearns is fine, right? Wrong! Watch CNBC's Jim Cramer as back-peddles for all he's worth. I don't know about you, but I blame the fanny-made paper. Kerphlewey!

Top 5 MBA Blogs of the Week - March 16, 2008
By Maren[FIND MBA] in FIND MBA Blog on Mar 16, 2008
Step right up! Yes, it's another maddening round-up of the week's most excitable, most exciting MBA blogs. Taking you all the way from India to Ithaca, from the Staatsrat to Singapore. Ladies and Gentlemen, we have poets! We have pole-dancing! We have lizards!
01. Apparently, the great American poet Robert Frost was a secret corporate strategist! That is, when he wasn't lamenting the destruction of America by corporate power. So says Vasquez-merchant at the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT) in Berlin.
02. Anshuman, at NUS Business School, describes his recent brush with death, courtesy of Singapore's answer to Godzilla.
03. I don't really know what to say about this post by Raju Komaravolu at IIM Ahmedabad, except that it's great.
04. One of this biggest stories in the US this week was that the man who brought you this has now become the subject of this.
05. This post from The Chronicles of Darden (Darden School of Business) reads like a fairly standard MBA blog (too much work, not enough sleep, too many apple pies) until you get to the end. Maybe it's significant that the author currently holds the pole vault record at the University of Virginia. Either way, a certain former New York senator may well be paying Darden a visit some time soon.
